• For what? The 12 (or 11 by some counts) Mustang A/FX Funny Cars were delivered with HP engines that were pulled and replaced with 427CID monsters.

    I would assume that they would have wanted the stronger bottom end and used HiPo main caps ?

  • Prior to the Mustang, Holman-Moody preped the 63 Falcon Sprint for the MonteCarlo Rally. The same engines, hipo 289's. going in the Cobra and 63 Fairlane were used, albeit, not the 6 bolt block but the earlier 5 bolt block. They enjoyed great power as the race shop of choice for the FORD BOYS. They could get their hands on pretty much anything, and probably even have things built so that Ford could better compete in the various racing scenes. Their scope of operation would have the race Mustangs in Drag Race form as a mere side-line to the NASCAR efforts, etc. They even were involved in the GT40 effort, though success came at the hands of Carroll Shelby's Team..think HiPo 289 on steroids, the ultimate hipo chassis.

    Are you sure the 289 HiPo's went into Falcons

    in the Monte Carlo rally in 1963. I believe they

    were 260's in 63 and the 289 HiPo was used in 64. Could be wrong though. As one of the drivers were a fellow Swede Bo Ljungfeldt

  • Back in the 60's, Holman-Moody did everything for and with FORD. My best friend's dad had a Holman-Moody built medium riser 427 in the family boat, another neighbor had a tunnel port 427 in a flatbottom. Holman-Moody also built a lot of street motors for the local hot shots. Another friend had a Holman-Moody balanced and blueprinted hipo 289 in a plain jane 66 k coupe-talk about a sleeper. Some of the old Holman-Moody alumni are still around. Some are grinding cams, some are building incredible cars for those who can afford them.

    Have that one picture I posted showing them in front of stacks of new 289 complete engines at thew warehouse. All of those appear to be 65 non- K codes (thin balancers, 4V's and tach drive dist)

  • I believe the Cobra's in 1963 had the hipo 289. They were raced in Europe and the engines came from Ford. The earliest Cobras DID have a 260. But they quickly graduated to the 289 when it became available in 63'. True, the first Sprint Falcons were powered by the 260, but Holman and Moody had Ford's best when it first came out and since they were in the Cobra's, they were there for the Falcon's and were as you said in the 1964 model. I wasn't there in 1963 but I followed it with interest and if they were allowed in the Falcon, they should've been in them.....were they allowed?....donno..<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

    There are two 69/70 Falcons running around in my area with 427's stuffed in them. They are both H/M engines, per one owner. When I talked to him, he said they bought both motors a while back and thought Falcons would be a good home.

    You are correct as soon as the 289 hipos (5-bolt version) were available they were installed into Cobras. When Shelby started installing the optional automatic transnisions the later 6-bolt 289 hipo engines were used, only in the automatic Cobras.
