Base Arvinode System

  • I am thinking about buying an Arvinode system for my Kar and there is a concourse and a base system being offered. I have read some comments about how satisfied members are with the concourse system and would like to hear from anyone who has installed the base system. The Waldron sales associate I spoke with said that both systems produce the same exhaust sound and performance. Does anyone have any experience they can share?

  • A while ago when reading about how the arvinode works I am sure I read that the top 'bar' was a chamber that collected sound waves then returned them to the main chamber, this having an effect on the sound produced. If this is right how does a base system work if the top chamber is missing ? Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely ?.

  • The top bar was just a support bar - not a sound tube.

It was necessary in '65 to keep the system together due to the weakness of the chambered mufflers.

Today's technology and metal strength allows the mufflers to be made without the need for the external support bar - but for show correctness they add it anyway.

If you don't plan to show the car in a judged class buy the system without the support bar and save some money - but get the same "KILLER" sound.

  • Ralph is correct.

Before we obtained actual shop drawings of the system we thought that the bar was the node tube, sometimes referred to as the "Quincke" tube (as in Herschel-Quincke sound attenuation). We now know that was incorrect and the bar was actually installed as a mass dampener and stiffener. It is a rectangular piece of steel tubing welded shut on each end and is a cosmetic detail that would be necessary for a concours correct restoration and has no bearing on the sound.

  • Thanks for the input guys. It sounds like the real decision is whether or not you will be showing in a concourse judged show class and if so you spend the extra money. Since I am not going to be in that class I think I will go for the base system.

    Thanks again!

Thanks for the clarification on the top bar, Dave. From all of the information up to this point I also thought that it was the "Quincke" tube.

  • I just picked up my kar from having my base Arvinode system installed and it sounds GREAT! There was a bit of a mixup on ordering the system but Waldron Exhaust (Joe) was involved and quikly made it right. They were very good to deal with and seem to know what customer service is all about.

  • I would want to know what an owners thoughts were after a 100 mile trip at 60 - 70 mph before I bought one. I suspect his ears might be bleeding.

I've put a couple of thousand miles on mine and typically travel at 70-80 turning 3,200-3,400 r.p.m. It's an awesome sound, and not at all uncomfortable (unless you're some kind of weenie who doesn't like a throaty sound)
