Sorry for all the questions. One more on date codes

  • The engine was built in a separate plant and shipped to the assembly plant usually without a vehicle designsted. For example, my K engine was cast on August 11, 1965, assembled on August 23, 1965 but the car was scheduled for October 18, 1965.

  • Thanks Jim. This is sort of what I figured. So my doors are dated dated April 7 and 11th. My door data plate is gone so I have no build date. If I got a block and heads with Feb or March dates, I should be in good shape then?

  • If you don't mind, post your VIN up to the last two numbers and I "may" be able to figure out a "close" SCHEDULED build date (my K is 6R09K1218xx, built in San Jose on Oct 18, 1965). I don't like to publish my full VIN because of scammers.

  • Cars miss their scheduled dates routinely. My original engine was assembled on April 9, 1963 and the car's scheduled date was April 9, 1963. Obviously, my car was actually assembled at a later date. Cars can be assembled before and after their scheduled dates. For engines, you know exactly when it was assembled. There is a lot more "slop" for engines being well before the car's sceduled date than after the sceduled date, but I would say that any engine between two months before to one month after, should not be questioned. Outside of that range is reason for a question.

  • Jim: My VIN is 5T09K1536xx

Math: My car does have the correct toploader but I can't read the date either. The steering box jives date wise with an April 6, 1965 date code. One thing though, it decodes as a PS box and my car is manual.

  • Your door data plate date code should be 20R, which is April 20, 1965. That is a scheduled build date, the actual can be a week either before or after. In effect, nothing on the car "should" have a date after April 20. Ford date codes have several formats and the best source for decoding that is the Concours Mustang Forum. Typically, a week before on sheet metal, two weeks for seats, three and up for "K" engines and "K" transmissions. The picture shows the engine assembly date.

  • Is it possible to know the toploader date range with the HEH-T tag?

There were posts on the earlier Hipo forum of multiple HEH-T VIN stamped transmissions as late as May 1965. Clearly the Ford MPC was in error that the HEH-T ended on 10/1/1964. This was used as the guide for all of the aftermarket fact sheets, listings by commercial transmission parts vendors and books. I have several HEH-T transmissions with VIN stamps and I will check the scheduled build dates for those VINs. I have a broken HEH-T main case that I use as a backstop for my chair at my bead blaster. I will check the VIN on that one just for fun when I am back at the shop.
