K Engine Build

  • I would like to build a correct engine for my car. I am not opposed to going to the aftermarket for some items for the build but want to stay true to the Kar.

Here's what I have so far collected. Standard bore block,Hipo main caps, timing cover, unmolested hipo heads, hatchet weight, correct flywheel and Hipo balancer. I will call Marv for the LeMans cam and lifters.

Looking for advice on what parts / part#s everyone has used when faced with my situation of not having a complete motor.

    So what to do about

    crankshaft

    rocker arms

    timing gears

    timing chain

    rods

    pistons

    fuel pump

    Thanks

  • Boss 302 rods are the same length with the same football head bolt and are easy to find. i saw a nos set several months ago for $200.00. i didnt buy them and they were at an auto swap meet.

  • Are these the correct parts ?

CLOYES C358 Hipo Narrow Timing Chain

CLOYES S351 Hipo Narrow Chain Crank Sprocket w/Hatchet Pin Hole

    CLOYES S350 Hipo Cam Sprocket

    or this one ?

CLOYES S406T Top Cam Gear w/integrated Hub Stop (later)

  • Quoted from zray on another forum...

    GEAR HISTORY

    CAM GEARS

S350 does not have the HUB STOP – you will need the cam washer

S372T replaced S350 – has HUB STOP molded in – this part was only produced briefly.

S406T replaced S372T – has HUB STOP molded in and uses 1 pc fuel eccentric.

S430T can be used with the later 2 piece fuel eccentric and a longer drive pin.

  • Here's what I have so far.............

Block Hipo block with hipo caps

Heads Hipo heads maybe a mild portting to be done....

    crankshaft Lemans cam

    Balancer Hipo balancer

    Have the Hatchet weight

    rocker arms ???

timing gears correct Hipo timing set

    timing chain correct Hipo chain

    rods ???

    pistons ???

    fuel pump ???

    Carburator Holley 715cfm

Intake still looking for a F4b or a Cobra intake

Which tri y's to use ????

  • The CAM GEAR history originated here on the HiPo site...with me I think...at least it looks like what I posted a while back. But zray may have posted it too - he is a very good source for info.

I was able to collect this info from a very nice Cloyes Engineer I spoke to about 5 years ago - and visual experience with several dozen small block Fords 289s and 302s over many years.

If you need more details I still have my notes - send me an email and I'll answer any questions you might have about what works with what.

You can make any of them work - just have to collect up all the right pieces - it is more than just the cam gear unfortunately in some cases.

To directly answer your question - BOTH are actually correct - but it depends upon when your motor was built and which cam retainer/space you have.

The flat gear is correct for early motors - thru Ford Rev Level L7 or L8 - these were built up to about May '65. The gear with the molded spacer was used after that.

    I hope this helps.

very kind comment, but I probably "stole" that info from your own post & posted it elsewhere without giving you due credit.

please give due consideration to using NEW crank, rods, and pistons. In other words all new rotating assembly. You can source all the above thru a supplier like summit.com at reasonable prices and will end up with an engine that is still true to the K code spirit. Plus you can rev it to the redline without undue worry.

  • i just found out Crower makes a con rod called "sportsman" for the 289. its a forged rod and available with or without through bolts and with pressed pin or busned pin. uses 289 bearings and pistons.
