sorry to hear about the loss of you mustang. i have worked as a commercial electrician for over 20 years. i have seen electrical fires caused by insulation on old wiring that cracked and shorted and went up in flames. the twa 800 747 jet blew up because of cracked insulation on old wiring. an empty 727 jet was taxiing to get some routine maintance when an explosian blew a hole in the wings leading edge and caused damage to the spar. if the plane had ben in the air the wing would have broken off due to the severly damaged spar. cracked insulation on wiring inside a conduit passing through a wing tank shorted , blew a hole in the conduit and ignited a small amount of fuel in the wing tank. a freind almost lost his commercial building with 4 businesses in it because of an electrical fire caused by bad insulation. i took ALL the wiring out of my 65 k mustang, & my 68 torino and threw it away. when i get around to my 69 b2 i will remove and replace ALL the wiring with new wiring. "IF" i end up with a 66 gt350h a friend has ALL the wiring will be replaced in it. its not worth it to keep old wiring with worn out insualtion in a car. as for originality what does it matter when the car burns to the ground because of the old worn out insulation. the insulation might look great but be prone to cracking. even if it looks good and is flexable today it could bite you in the ass a year from now. i see too many high dollar restorations with 40+ year old wiring just wating to short and ignite. the insualtion of today has much better chemical properties. REPLACE THAT WORE OUT WIRE WITH NEW WIRE ! carry a fire extinguisher and put a battery disconnect switch in.

Thanks for the warm welcome, chaps.

It didn't take as long as I expected. I picked up this '67 GT-350 4-speed a couple weeks ago. Sadly, the original Hi-Po has been replaced with a 302. So, now the hunt continues for a K-motor/bits.

Anyone have an extra one laying around? Cheers,

    Ron

nope dont got one. i bought my 65 fb gt k in 1974. the guy i bought it from blode the motor up real good and junked it b 4 i met him and bought the mustang. he kept the 4 speed. i almost didnt buy it cause back then it wasnt a big deal. he wanted $125.00 for the mustang and no one wanted it cause you coulf get a real nice 65-66 v8 mustnag fastback (plenty of gt's) for $600-$900. that was 1974. i finally bought it and kept it stored in my relatives shed until about 1-1/2 years ago. i know a few people looking for 289 hipo engines. you could build a clone engine. use boss 302 rods. Lee Holeman sell brand new duplicate hipo solid cams. use an aftermarket dual point dist. modify the autolite carb for a cable choke, etc. you can build it to run like a hipo 289. i got a 392w i'm putting in mine.

i just found out Crower makes a con rod called "sportsman" for the 289. its a forged rod and available with or without through bolts and with pressed pin or busned pin. uses 289 bearings and pistons.

i have seen a few factory stripe kits on non gt mustangs. yes it would be the same on the fenders without the letters. i have seen various lettering that appeared to be made with some kind of tape. i remember stripes on one car with GT 289 in that area.

back in the 70's in jackson mississippi (population about 250,000)i remember about 25 K cars including mine. there were 4 k's in mccomb ms (population about 20,000) along with a 66 shelby H and a 67 shelby 500 and a (2)68.5 428 fastback mustangs and these are cars i knew about. there were a lots of 65-66 mustangs seen out in the country side. i almost forgot about the 65 fb K shell sittng in a field in crystal springs ms. that a guy bought to "rebody" his rotted to pieces (rusted) new york bought 66 shelby back in the 70's. btw those population numbers are what it was in the 70's.

thanks for the info. what i read got my curiosity. back in 1973 i got my fisrt mustang a C code notchback. a few months later i noticed the fasbacks and bought a 65 GT form the original (quite common for 8 year old cars). shortly after i discovered pony interior and bought a 66 fb gt pony interior. in late 74 i bought my current 65 fb gt K minus engine and trans. between 1973 and about 1982 i went on to go through a total of 2-65 gt A fb ,3-66 gt A fb all bought as good running cars and sold running except 1 66 fg A gt that was rearended and totaled. i kept my 65 gt K stored in a shed until recently. back in jackson ,ms. during the 70's i use to see MANY 65-66 GT mustangs and there were quite a few K cars too. i never paid attention to some of the GT detail stuff like the floor reinforecements plates etc. all but i of my gt was bought from the original owner. i almost forgot about a 66 fg gt A i bought about 15 years ago form a junk yard in Pearsonville Ca. where i like now. the car had bent frame rails but no rust but i decided to sell it shortly after. i wish we had more info on the history of the 65-66. back in the day no one i knew including myself had any intrest in the history of the mustang after all it wasnt considered an old or classic at the time. thanks for all your replys

Curious what your source for this information is?

saw some info while serching this site about the GT package not being available until febuary of 1965 about halfway through the 65 model year. typed "first 65 Gt mustang" on yahoo and went to several sites that had info that the very first mustang with the GT package was a 65 convertable built 2/20/65. so anyone with a 65 GT that has an earlier build date would have a fake GT. i was trying to find info on when the FIRST GT fastback might have ben built and posted the question to see if anyone here might know. just wondering. what i read was the GT package was introduced to commemerate the 1,000,000 mustang sold. my 65 has a build date of Q26 and dearborn unit 677490. it would seem to me that if you added all the 64.5 year cars along with the rest of the 65 from T and R plants you would have 1,000,000 sold at that time. one site i remeber was K.A.R. if i remember right but i was looking at several sites on the web search.

was doing some research and found that the first "GT" mustang was a convert with a build date of 2-20-65. b 4 that there were no GT mustangs. the GT was introduced to commerate the selling of the 1,000,000 mustang. was wondering if any might know when the first FASTBACK GT was built and if it was an A or K.

my daily driver right now is a ford 2006 f350 with a diesel. i get about 14 around town and about 15 on the highway at 65 mph. some of you guys are getting better that that with hotrods. when i get done with my 65 if it gets 10 mpg with the way i drive that will be o.k. with me. cant expect good gas mileage form a hotrod and yes a hipo 289 is a factory hotrod engine as is the boss 302,boss 351,boss 429 , 428 cj , etc. the only way to accuratly measure gas mileage is to fill the tank to the top of the filler neck. write the mileage on the odometer down and drive around untill close to empty and refill all the way to the top of the neck subtract new mileage fron old mileage and divide the mileage by the gallons it took to fill up the second time. 195 miles divided by 14.5 gallons = 13.44 mpg. of couse that really getting close to walking with a 16 gal tank !
