Pictures with 15" steel wheels wanted

  • Hi guys

I´ve read in the K Code book that some 64,5 cars where equipped

with 15x5,5" Kelsey Hayes wheels. Does anybody have pictures of

    these cars?

    Would love to see some! <img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

    Thanks Jerry

  • Jerry,

There is an excellent picture in the book The 289 High

Performance Mustang by Tony Gregory. It shows late Dennis Havens'

64.5 red coupe with the 15" wheel option.

  • Hi Bo

I´ve seen that but that can not be the only car with such

wheels?? There are more original pictures of aliens that

landet on earth than from a Mustang with 15" steel wheels.

    Bye Jerry

Correct! There have been far more sightings of aliens than original 15" steel wheels on a K code.

  • What exactly is the purpose of the 15" steel wheel anyway?? I always thought that they were just a standard old station wagon wheel being used as an option on the Mustangs.....

In 1964 it was a better idea, and optional.

    Jim

  • Sure can. The 15" steel rims on the 64.5K was an option called Sports Car Special. From research, there were only 14 cars produced with this option and 3 are known to exist today. One in TX, one in CA and the one I have in NJ. I will get you some photos. Original matching numbers K with 3.89 9" rear, 4 speed.

  • Rims were black from the factory, hubcap delete, though I believe they did put dog dish hubcaps in the trunk, mine were long gone. I am lucky though as everything else is there, all matching numbers. I will take some pictures this weekend for you, car is undergoing restoration. In the HPM registry there is a picture of a red coupe with the Sports Car Special (SCS) option, 15" steel rims. I believe also there were some other slight suspension options included in this SCS package, but I have to pull the papers to review. What do you have?

What tyres did they run? And what size?

Then i´m very happy thanks Jerry

The only early HiPo that I have seen with the original 15" wheels is the very early (prototype?) car in the Motor Trend (or Road and Track?) road test article in 1964. The tires on that particular car were Firestone Super Sports in the 5.50/5.90 x 15 size. They were blackwall tires with the "Firestone" in small white letters.

I always wondered if any early HiPo cars were out there that were originally equipped with these wheels. Sounds like an interesting car you have, GT-350. I would love to see pictures also. I'm certainly not doubting the originality of the wheels, but I would be curious if there is any original paper work on the car showing these wheels for this car or anyone's car here. I would love to see that also.

    Hi Brant

Are you sure with 5.50/5.90x15? Sounds pretty skinny.

    Original the Mustangs had 6.95x14.

Or am i mixing up something here?

    Thanks Jerry

    Jerry,

I agree. It certainly sounds like a small size, especially considering that the GT-350's came with 7.75 x 15 size Blue Dots.

I'm just going by the pictures. It sure does look like 5.50/5.90 - 15 on the side of the tire.

  • Jerry,

Some of the old magazines with road test articles have car(s) with these 15" wheels/tires. I don't have any here right now, so I'm not sure of magazine names and dates.
