What would one expect the underside to be? Red Oxide? undercoating?
Did the factory ever do undercoating?

I have been told that it really depends on the assembly plant.
My July 1965 Dearborn Kar was/is done in the red oxide primer.
My April 66 Metuchen K coupe was ordered new with undercoating ($23)but unsure if this was dealer or factory installed (I would suspect dealer) Its really thick and hard and covers everything but the suspension. Was ordered March 15 and delivered April 6 they were really pumping them out fast!

Would have been something the dealer sold (and applied or sent out) to the buyer not something done at the factory

During that period and plant the color would have been a dark slightly shinny (not flat) red oxide epoxy primer sealer. No undercoating was applied at the factory though sound deadener would have been applied to the inner surfaces of the quarter panel and rear wheelwells before painting the car body color and the front wheelwells after assembly
Having lived on the East Coast and ordered two Fords (64 Fairlane Sports Coupe 'K' and a 66 Mustang Fastback), most dealers highly recomended undercoating. Cars on the lot were undercoated as part of the sale pitch.

My Dearborn Kar was also done with the red oxide.

I suppose you know that is not factory primer?
As seen a couple pf posts above, would the two dual exhaust muffler bracket studs plates be primed? It would seem that they would be installed after the body was painted.
Jim
The hanger stud brackets would have been installed after the car was painted.
When were the holes made? Before paint? After? Drilled? Punched? Was the exposed metal of the holes treated?
Jim
Those holes were probably made into the piece before it was welded together to the rear build-up. They were definitely not drilled after the car was painted.
Agree with Charles that is closer to rustoleum red oxide the seam sealer has also been altered.
