Timing Chain Question

  • That's what I've always thought too. Looks like there's also ample clearance between the chain and the hatchet in the first pic.

Gary, do you have anymore details on this setup?

  • Dave, no I was hopping someone could ID it without me removing the the timing chain cover. The engine is in a 64 Fairlane KCode I purchased.

Could it be one of the Cloyes double rollers made for the K Code in the 70's? I will wait until tomorrow and if necessary I will remove the cover and look for numbers.

    Gary

  • As I have posted before I spoke to a Cloyes engineer who confirmed that they made a dual roller set up in the 70's - this could be one.

Cloyes number was 9-2105 in their Speed Set line.

He said the crank gear had the proper hole for the hatchet weight pin.

Be interesting to see what numbers you find on the gears - post some pics if you can.

I doubt it would change the balance as long as the 2 crank gears weight roughly the same.

  • Hello Ralph, how you been? I think it is safe to say this is one of the Cloyes double rollers. What else could it be? This is the only double roller I have ever seen in a K Code engine. I wish they still made them.

I really hate to pull the dampener and remove the cover but will do it if we cannot confirm this is a Cloyes by just looking at the pics.

  • It probably is a Cloyes double roller chain that wasn't really roller. They called them that but didn't have the sleeve on chain that turned with gear.I've used them for years when I was drag racing and that's somebodies ole wives tale that you can't use double roller chain in Hipo motor. They just wasn't smart enough to figure out how to make them work.Still can today with no problems!

Hey Larry, how you been? I will be detailing the engine first and will supply more pics on the Fairlane forum.

Bob, would you be willing to share how you do this? I'm sure most people would rather have the double roller over the standard chain on the HIPO engines.

    Gary

  • Double rollers can be used on hipo motors but the rotating assembly has to be rebalanced to match the loss of the hatchet weight. I know that Ford used the smaller chains from the factory, but I am personally not a fan of having a lesser chain in a hipo motor.

  • Dave, The double roller chain setup in Garys car does have the stock counterweight and that is what makes this one interesting.

  • Fred,

Agreed; see my 11/21 post. Question is, are there any of these sitting around in a warehouse collecting dust?? Probably wasn't a fast moving part back then and there may be some leftovers.<img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • I've searched for the past couple of years and come up empty.

The Cloyes engineer said the Speed Set for the Hipo went obsolete in the late 70's - and they didn't make to many to start with.

  • The reason I asked about another company making them is this chain and sprocket shows no real wear. This indicates to me it was put in not too long ago or this engine has set for years without being run. I guess we will never really know.

    Gary,

    A rare chain indeed!

I wonder if we could get Cloyes to make up a batch for us? <img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
