Has anyone with a 65 been able to document original driveshaft markings? I'm looking for some photographs with examples of San Jose cars if anyone has any. I have found the faint outline of one and possibly two stripes in the center of my driveshaft, but the shaft was cleaned by the PO and I don't know if there were only two, or three, or what color(s) they were.

Dave,
Don't know if it helps but on the HOME botton on the left side of this page under Forum Menu. Then click the TECH AND INFO SITE botton, K-CODE MUSTANG UNDERCARRIAGE botton. You'll find pictures of the stripes on the driveshaft. Not sure year of car or San Jose, but it's a start good luck.

I believe that is a 1965 Dearborn car.

Uhmmmm, I don't think so. It's supposed to be a Shelby so that would make it a SJ car.

While we are on the subject I'm getting ready to do a driveshaft for a January 66 DB kar. Any info on driveshaft markings?

The reason why driveshafts were marked was to distinguish between the different applications. It might help to know what yours is. You can look in the book 'The 289 High Performance Mustang' by Tony Gregory for the HP markings (I don't want to spoil a sale otherwise I would tell you).

Thanks for all of the suggestions, but I'm doing reasearch and want to look at unrestored original 65 SJ hipos with toploaders, which is why I'm hoping to find someone with that particular plant and driveline.

Same here... Tony's book is not the bible when it comes to paint markings as they can be different from different plants and nowhere can I find where the book indicates which plant the listed paint markings come from.

Originally I saw this post and passed it by since I had no help to offer at this time, but have been asked to post.
As most of you know I've sent allot of years collecting paint marks and such (think I placed the first paint marks on a show car about 1982 or so) but unfortunately we have not found original examples of all the different models and applications. Often the paint marks were not just related to the year, supplier of the part, application and plant but often changed one or more times during the year.
Early cars are at a disadvantage since their build sheets do not include any paint identifiers to help us out all these years later

Over the years I've seen a fair amount of reproduced driveline stripes on early K codes but will not pass on or suggest using any of these. Would rather not have a mark than have something copied from another unverified resource.
IMHO we have TOO much of this as one owner puts a mark on their car from someone else's only to have it reproduced over and over again. Perkin’s 70 Boss was the first example of this. Once it made its way into print those same paint marks ended up on all kinds of cars, since “who knows they are right for my car???” The owner that said that lost points for applying them to a 69 KR
Also please understand that just because one car had a mark on the car no way guarantees that the same mark was ever placed on another car. On the cars I do place markings on I typically only place marks back that came from that particular car or that have been found on multiple cars from the same time period, plant and cars equipped the same.
At almost every show I find at least six cars that have marks that either never came on cars from that factory or someone got colors from somewhere but had no idea of how (method, pattern and process.. even the right hue).
I understand it can be frustrating these days as everyone figures we should know everything and it should be available at the click of the mouse. Hopefully someone will turn up a handful of original cars (don’t want to base stuff on a single car if we can help it) that we can evaluate and come to some conclusion.
Stepping way down off my soap box

Hi,
I painted my drive shaft on 5S275 with three
different colored rings, light blue,
dark blue and black. This was after looking at
5R104 that was restored by? in the early
90's. There was an article with many pictures in
Mustang Monthly showing this car.
Is it the wrong colors for a San Jose built early May
65 HiPo (Shelby), I don't know but I'll leave these
on for now until somebody can prove they are wrong.

Hi Bo, I have the same article somewhere which I believe is a Perkins(?) restoration. I was going to restripe my original 66 SJ driveline the same way (guess this illustrates Jeff's point) but when I cleaned it there were traces of the original striping which was different than the article. I decided to replicate the original stripes. Eventually had the original retubed but did take this lousy pic of the original tube. Dave

Well that is one way to look at it

Have pictures of the same car. You don't see many early drivelines with three stripes and there is often a work spot on the driveline where the emergency can rub.
Looked again through my pictures and there is one that was offer as an example of a 4 speed Hipo. No year or month nor very clear. And I did not collect this directly!!
