Fitting alloy GT350 oil pan

  • Hi Guys

I am having problems fitting an alloy cobra oil pan to my K code engine. The oil pump pick up screen hits the back edge of the pan where it drops down. By my calculations, the screen needs to be further forward by aprox 3/4 of an inch (20mm).

Is there a special pick up tube assy for this pan or do you modify the standard one?? I would prefer to get the correct part if possible.

    Cheers

    Steve

  • To my knowledge, Shelby didn't change the oil pick up

when he installed the Cobra oil pan. Had no problems fitting

the oil pan on my 65 GT350 or my 67 GT500 with a 289 HP

engine and Cobra oil pan. I also added the Boss 302

windage tray on both without any issues.

  • A friend of mine had an aftermarket pan from Branda and he had the same problem. They are somewhat obvious as the oil pan bolt holes do not line up with the raised surface for them and the indentation of the vertical ribs are not lined up either.

  • As I thought. The oil pan was purchased from Tony Branda and I must admit that I was disappointed by the finish, especially the front and rear oil seal area. The casting was that rough that I had to build up the low points. It would have leaked for sure.

The engine has a windage tray fitted and I am fitting the pan while the engine is still in the car, so is not as easy as it could be.

Thanks for you replys. I will keep at it.

  • Hi, i had one on my motor from branda with the stock pickup and the only way the pan would fit was with the motor right side up. I tried for an hour with the motor upside down on a motor stand and the pickup would get caught on the windage doors and bend the crap out of them .You will need someone to help you as that pan gets heavy trying to get the screws started but it does fit good luck Otto

  • I tried several of those pans from both Branda and Virginia Mustang. No luck with quality or fit, and I finally gave up and stuck with the original pan. I don't know if Blue Thunder is casting those, but they are pretty rough, and the gate hinges weren't well done at all. Branda said they were making their own, but I couldn't verify it.

  • Thanks for the response. My son and I have managed to fit the pan, took 2 days in all. I had to mill aprox 1 inch from the back casting rib inside the pan, re align holes and repair and modify the flaps inside as well. I am glad I was not paying anyone for the job. I would not recommend this for the beginner.

  • Did you check that the oil pan doesn't leak

through pores in the aluminum before mounting it?

Quite often the repos do that unfortunately.

  • I have checked the pan for porous leaks, so far all good. Went for a drive, and rechecked for leaks. Still clean.

I don't want to tackle another for awhile. Meantime I will pass on my experience to Tony Branda.

We have never handled these oil pans, and I have no experience with the fit of these repros. You may want to contact the guys at Cobra Automotive and ask them about the different ones on the market and the fit. They (Cobra Automotive) actually work on the cars and would know any issues with quality and fit of any of the pans available.

  • My apology to Virgina Mustang if I had them confused with some other vendor. I'll restate to having bought one pan from Branda and a second from some other vendor I had confused with VM.

  • just wanted to add a suggestion. for those who are willing to wave original parts. the canton t pan with a one-piece pan gasket with the late model oil pan rails are 100% leak-proof!

    looks real cool too!

  • Did you measure from the bottom of the pickup to the pan? This is the first thing you should have done. If you want a real nice oil pan, have one custom made by Armando. These things are a work of art. Forget using overpriced poser parts. I bought one and am very impressed.
