Bellhousing Date Question

  • I believe the date on the 64-67 hi-po bell housing is located on the inside as the year only. C5 part # on an outside edge. At least the NOS piece I have is that way. Once installed, no way to tell what date the piece is. Unless your taking photos of the date to display with the car, I don't beleive there are any visual differences between which year housing you have. If any one has a housing dated on the outside, I'd be interested to learn about it.

  • I thought all original bellhousings have date codes. I have several with date codes. Two digit year code with either stars or dots in a circle around the year code. Number of dots corresponds to month.

  • The one that I have is NOS and has a "65" year on it. It has the dots, looks like mine is June or July (hard to tell). Its located on the transmission mounting surface. What an interesting way to mark the month...

  • I wonder why they had a different standards on all the parts (year month day, year month week, year month, dots, alpha, numeric, etc). Any others? <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Timing chain covers and thermostat housings are also dated like this, all are made by Sheffield Co. As mentioned, the bell housing date will never be seen once the trans is mounted. Likewise, the thermostat housing date can't be seen once the upper rad hose is on.

  • Tom and I have early Fomoco boxed bellhousings. Mine has a spot of orange paint about 2 or 3 inches in diameter right behind where the starter goes. I was not aware that there was any difference in bellhousings used for a hi-po than a standard 289 car. Anyone know why mine would have orange paint and Tom's does not? I have a photo I could post if I knew how to post it. Part # on my bellhousing is C5AA-6394-B, and part #s on box are C5AZ-6392-A, C5AA-6392-B? or D?

  • Matt,

The C5AA-6394-B casting number bell housing is a non-Mustang unit that includes 65 HiPo Fairlanes and other non-HiPo cars. The Mustang housing has casting number C5DA-6394-A. Since neither is HiPo specific I'm not sure why yours would have an orange paint code
