Scott Fuller 66 Shelby/Hipo exhaust repro

  • I hope its ok to talk about this here, over on the SAAC forum there is a disscusion going on about getting Scott Fuller to do one of his exact reproductions of the 1966 Shelby Exhaust which would also fit our Hipo's. He does some incredible work and having an exact repro to fit our cars would be a great contribution. He is looking for some original exhaust samples to copy and an original muffler and resonator to cut open to reproduce the inside to get the correct tone of the OEM exhaust.

  • I, for one, would be very interested, and inclined to even purchase such a set...Count me in...Anyone else?

I may be, but I have a feeling that it would have to be my only purchase I would be able to make for the car in a given year.

I don't think there is a projected price for the '66 system yet, but he gets about $2,000.00 for the '67 exhaust system. Throw in a set of J. Cowles Tri-y headers at $995.00 and you are starting to pile up some serious cash.

  • I dont think I would go for the tri Y's Ray. And I think Motive would be the only way for me to get close to stock. Its not as if I can go somewhere and pick it up.

  • I may be wrong but Tri-Y's would be a serious departure from stock, like a big Holly. My insurance asks if its stock....and the exhaust system, with H pipe , etc., even with different mufflers, would still be stock as long as there were mufflers....my two cents.

not stock for you, but stock for me. I was just pointing out that the proposed exhaust system, from headers, or manifolds, on to the end, is going to be serious investment.

What kind/brand of exhaust system is everyone running now?

Stock H-pipe plus a Flowmaster engineered kit for the Mustang which includes 50 series mufflers and the required intermediate and tailpipe components. Not stock of course, but damn it sounds good at all RPM's. And, it has little if any of the dreaded droning (at least to my damaged ears resulting from 30 years in the USAF on the flight line) often complained about.

  • Stock manifolds and pipes with 2" Magnaflow (PN 11124), no resonators. Not too loud at cruise, no drone, nice roar under power. May have gone Arvinode if I didn't have this system waiting. Removed the trumpets and have 3.5" open tips. There are some clips on Youtube. Would like to add Tri-y's some day, thinking it would be a little louder.

  • Tri-Y's would probably be louder....the question remains, who makes them that fit, that drop in and don't need to be modified...I bought a stainless set from Cleveland and they were wrong in so many ways, of course they claimed they were a drop-in fit..NOT. So who has found a set that fits and where did you get them.???

Yes, that has been the main reason I don't have them. You see some in the Mustang catalogs that say 'won't fit with HIPO Z-bar' and ask yourself 'how can that be since the Tri-y was made for the Shelby?' I have seen a couple different size tubes used, and if the pictures are accurate, some different 'Y' configurations. Bell housing and steering linkage problems are other issues.

About 3 years ago, I talked to somebody at Scott Drake. He told me the one's that they supply are made exactly like the original version Shelby used and will fit a HIPO. He offered a list of vendors that sold their version. Now that said, I don't know if Shelby had to persuade them to fit back then or not, so I never pulled the trigger.

I have a set of the inexpensive (currently $219.95) nickel plated Patriot Tri-y headers. They fit fine. I bought them from npd about 8 or 9 years ago. Considering the considerable use my car gets, they have held up rather well.

Previously I had tried a set of plain painted Patriot Tri-y headers that did not fit exactly. They hit the pitman arm.
