Current API Certified Motor Oil Concerns

  • I was at Walmart the other day, they have on the shelf, Accell brand 10w40 motor oil. It says on the bottle, " for use in pre-1989 cars" not for use in new cars. That brand is also sold at Advanced Auto parts or Autozone. I have seen that brand of gear oil at the parts store but not the oil. I think I'll stick with Castrol.

  • So much for the good old days and the simple oil change. Any decent 10w 30 and away we go. Would be great if we could all agree on which oil and possible additive is best for our hipos. I will be changing the oil at the end of the summer (currnntly using mobil 1 10w 30). I drive in the summer only and do less than 500 miles a year. Don't know what to use. Thanks, Ed

The fact that we all are Hi-Po enthusiast says that we are also a rare breed of individualists, So much so that we will never all agree on which oil is best. The are many "right" choices

I'm still using Mobil 1 15W-50 for over 17,000 miles without measurable wear or leaks. it's formulated with higher levels of ZDDP needed by flat tappet engines.

".... Why are you reintroducing Mobil 1 15W-50? Have there been any changes to the formulation, or is it identical to the previous product?

Mobil 1 15W-50 is being reintroduced based on popular demand. Mobil 1 15W-50 provides higher viscosity, designed to provide extra protection for performance vehicles and vehicles that operate in severe service, such as towing, hauling and racing. Additionally, Mobil 1 15W-50 contains higher levels of anti-wear (ZDDP or Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate) that may be required for certain racing applications and camshaft designs. This is a new Mobil 1 15W-50 formulation and is not the same as the product that was marketed a few years ago. ......"

  • I'm using the Mobil1 15W-50 also and will continue to unless something else looks like it will do the job. I like that Mobil has addressed the ZDDP issue for the needs of older and performance vehicles. I'm sure there are other oils that are adequate, hopefully the other companies will also provide info and assurance as to which of their products is best.

  • I have always been a stickler on staying with the viscosity called out for by Ford. I feel uncomfortable going from 10w-30 to 15w-50 but I guess it is not a big deal. If that is what we need to do to get the ZDDP required then so be it. Someone set me straight on the viscosity thing. Thanks, Ed

  • Did some research. Unless you race the hell out of your hipo, I beleive the 15 or 20w-50 is too heavy and not necessary. I found a 10w-30 racing oil with the ZDDP required from Brad Penn. They used to be Kendall. Remember the green oil in the late 60's? Well, it is still available. I ordered 6 quarts today from Dave @ D & D oil in Clinton, NY. 315-853-6562. For more info go to amref.com. Hope this helps, ET

a very small percentage of HP may be lost by using a heavier oil. However, for my needs, the higher ZDDP levels plus easy availabilty (of the Mobil 1 15W-50) outweighs the possible HP loss

Please chime in if there might be other negatives that I'm not aware of.

  • I just started my 289 for the first time this weekend. I used Joe Gibbs BR Oil which is the oil he uses for breaking in all of his racing engines. It isn't cheap, but I wasn't interested in wiping out my new custom grind solid lifter cam. After the twenty minute breakin, I changed the oil and replaced it with Rotella-T oil. I spoke to the racing shop that did my machining and her recomended that I continue to use it. Also, you can stay away from synthetics for engines using traditional lifters. Synthetics are just too slippery and can prevent the lifters from spinning properly. If you aren't driving your car 30,000 miles a year and change you change your oil often, you can use standard dynasaur oil and save money too.<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Here is a copy of an Email I received about ZDDP. I don't have the time to check it out (remodeling), but hopefully, someone will and report back on it. The Email was received from Dennis Kirban of Kirban Performance.

"I have the solution for the lack of zddp in todays oil I have it in the exact concentration that wil ltreat a typically 4-5 quart oil change my company is kirban performance we produce over 150 mustang parts for later models and I am in the turbo buick business which is part of the zddp problem as they have flat tappets... this product is coming out now...I have it available next week the concentration is 0.15% which is what was in the oil in 1988 SF category...works with nay oil anyone uses today EOS FROM GM IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE plus most oil unless oyu go race oil single weight do not hav ZDDP... mor einf email zddplus@kirbanperformance.com and request info on this. my source behind this is a millionaire who owns several companies including one of the DNA LABS"

  • Comp Cams, I am told, has available their own "EOS" type product. I am nearing the first start of my new engine, and will be finalizing my oil selection, but this is in the lead at the moment.
