Do I need to install a thin piece of rubber or something else between the spring perches and the leaf springs to prevent noise or any other issues?

There is a torque spec for the U bolt that is worth paying attention to. There is more stretch in those U bolts than you might think and it takes a bit to pull them down evenly. Not a bad idea to put on fresh lock nuts either.

Actually, in 1965, Mercury Comets used a rubber insulator that wrapped around the leaf springs where they attached to the perches on the rear axle to cushion and isolate.

On the early 65 Dearborn Mustang I have seen a thin paper like between the perch and the leaf spring. It looks like brown wrapping paper and is a tad bigger then perch.
