Brake Proportioning Valve

  • Hi. I'm looking for some info on brake proportioning valves that were used on '65 GT's & K codes (ie. disc front, drum rear). I believe the part number is : C5ZZ-2B091-B?

Will this work with a dual master cylinder, rather than the original single master cylinder?

Is this one of them on Ebay? : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/65-…1QQcmdZViewItem

What's the braking performance like with this original valve compared to something like an adjustable Wilwood?

    Any info much appreciated. Thanks

  • The one on Ebay is an original style valve. They work well and are adjustable like the Wilwood valve but not as user friendly. The originals like that will work with a dual cylinder however the Wilwood valve is far less expensive if you are not interested in originality as apparently you are not if you are using a dual master cylinder. Keep in mind that the Ford valve was expensive even back in the day when they were still available from Ford.

  • Thanks for the detailed information Fred.

Although I'm looking at a dual master cylinder for safety, I'm still quite keen on keeping the rest of the car as original as possible. Anyway, I guess the valve will go for quite a bit as you suggest.

On the part number C5ZZ-2B091-B, is that stamped on the valves anywhere to confirm them as an original?

  • There is no part number on the valve, but that is the right part. I have three of them already rebuilt for sale. To site members, $200.00 530-589-4645 DON in CALIF

  • Or my NOS valves..just two left...and these are really for thoroughbred cars, just ask the Forum members!<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Actually the valves do have a Kelsey Hayes number of 56653 cast into the valve. I am now down to only 7 NOS ones after having over 25 of them.

  • Thanks for the feedback on this. I've got a couple more questions if anyone knows :

What is the correct colour for the brake proportioning valve - Gray, black, natural.....?

What does the number stamped on the rear cover mean?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

They were natural originally but the NOS ones

in Ford boxes are painted in a light blue color.

The marking on the side cover is the date code.

Like mine has 39-5, day 39 in 1965.

    /Bo

  • All of the NOS ones that I have and have ever seen, and I have seen a lot, are a light gray color.

So what do you tend to do when restoring now - gray or natural with some sort of clear coat?

I forgot to ask as well, what about the colour of the brake distribution block?

  • The brake distribution block is brass and will be natural. Charles can chime in on the finish for the distribution block bracket.

  • The non-brass part of the distribution block on a 65/66 would have been gold dichromate. Nearly impossible to re-plate without ruining. I usually just tape up the brass and mist some gold paint on the bracket. Or, find a really nice original one with good plating.
