Rally Pack Question

  • I have two 8000 RPM high-profile rally packs. To my knowledge they are both original and not reproductions. They appear to be identicle in every respect except one has "MUSTANG" on the face of the tach and the other has "FORD". What does this difference mean? Early, late production? I'm not sure. If anyone can shed some light I would really appreciate it. Also, I am probably going to sell them as they are both extra. Thank you.

  • The "difference" according to most sources I've seen is that the "MUSTANG" version was factory installed and also had "RALLY-PAC" on the center section.

The over the counter "Parts Department" version was the "FORD" version and did not have "Rally-Pac" on the center. I assume this was done so that it could be used on other FoMoCo vehicles - not just the Mustang. I have a picture of a NOS over the counter unit that matches this description.

I have an original 8K "FORD" version on my '65 HiPo taken from another car.

  • Thank you, Ralph. I pulled both of these off my two HiPo's. The "FORD" rally pac does have the words "Rally pac" on the center bridge. Exactly like the "Mustang" version.

  • Hi Oscart:

My rally pacs are the high profile style. Both are used; one is like new, the other is real nice but does show some wear. Both units are at "Gary the Tachman" being refurbished right now. Quartz clock being installed and tachs being cleaned and tuned up. Let me know if it is the High Profile you want. Thanks.

  • Thanks, I saw that one, but that is the style and color I am looking for. I am looking for something a little more complete and in working order though. Cheers.

  • Hi Oscart: Both of my rally pacs are black/camera case finish. The red rally pac on E-Bay is the "low profile". When mine are returned from the Tachman they will be in perfect working order with attaching wiring. I don't know yet what the price will be as I need to see what the Tachman will be charging me for the refurbishment.

I concur with RalphJr in regards to the Ford and Mustang words on the tach and Rally-Pac on the bridge. I have an NOS C5ZZ 10B960 C 8K Rally-Pac in the Ford box and it has Ford on the tach with a blank bridge. However I do have a number of used 8K Rally-Pacs that have the word Ford on the tach and Rally-Pac on the bridge. I also have a used 8K Rally-Pac with Mustang on the tach and Rally-Pac on the bridge. I do not ever recall seeing one with the word Mustang on the tach with a blank bridge. All of this could of course also be affected by replacement tach heads or conversions from 6K to 8K in later life. I do believe with the number of these that I have that most of them are original.
