66 HiPo water pump replacement and ID

  • I was thinking of replacing the water pump on my Mustang while I'm at it. I was having coolant leaking down and over my balancer last year and dripping onto the floor. A mechanic told me that could be a leaky water pump. Any other ideas?

I'm pulling it off to get at the timing chain cover so now is the time. Did the '66 K codes have unique water pumps? Mine appears to be cast iron. I found some numbers on the front looks like 31047- see pics. Where do I find a correct replacement? Is mine correct?

    Thanks for all your help!

  • The original waterpump would be a C6OE with FoMoCo cast into the front. Looks like you have an aftermarket pump on there now. Your local parts stores may have an original, but you'll most likely only find the C8OE one, which is pretty much identical. Remember that the impeller is unique for a hi-po, but you can forget finding one of those "off the shelf".

  • Perfect information for me Charles. Thanks! I'll be replacing the timing chain while I'm at it. To think this all started out as a freshening up of paint.

The HiPo replacement impeller is still available from Ford Motorsport although it no longer appears in their current catalog so as soon as the current supply is gone it appears they too will be obsolete. The Motorsport part# is M-8512-A302, cost is about $35.

I recently bought two of these impellers and had them installed in C6OE housings.

  • Good info here. I was able to find a rebuilt C8OE on my first phone call and for only $22!! It's already in my garage.

    Thanks guys!

You just wait... Rustoration-itis is catchy. My project started out to replace a slipping clutch, fix the brakes, and find a pesky rain leak. Now I'm looking at more correct-looking finishes, more correct parts, seal the chassis, replace the bushings... About all that's left on the car are the engine block, tranny, and rear suspension, and they won't be there much longer! And I'm only building a driver for cryin' out loud.
