Help Finding Owner 5F07K279166 NIR

  • Today I received a block, main caps, rods and pistion that I purchased. This is one of the nicest blocks I have run across in a long time. The cylinders cleaned with a light honing (sp) and are a std bore. The piston look to have had very little wear on them.

Now, how can we locate the owner of the car it belongs in? I would love to get it back with it's car if I can. The VIN stamp looks like it is 5F07279166. The casting date is 4H20. I am attaching a photo of the block VIN to let all of you look at it and make sure I am reading it correctly. Thanks, Gary

  • I was wondering why this topic doesn't have it's own file (sub-directory?). Am I missing something?

I have seen numerious adds for K cars that have either a block or trans that is vin stamped with another car's vin.

A question for those of you in this situation - If the money was right, would you be willing to sell that block or trans to the current owner of the vehicle missing the part?

If the answer is "no", why not?

Also, in your opinion, is a car with a "K" transmission, but not the correct trans the car came with worth more than a standard casting housing build to correct specs?

The sub-directory I was thinking of wouldn't necessarily have to be for vin-stamped items only. I would like to see blocks that are not vin-stamped, but that have the correct casting numbers for sale.

I know these correct casting block come up for sale once in a while, but if everyone in the hobby knew they could sell them for a premium (pipe dream, I know), would they be more likely to check the blocks that they have just lying around?

We have all seen ads on this site posted by people who are just looking for a correct block. Can we make finding one easier?

I applaud Gary for his post, and I hope he finds the owner of that car and strikes a deal. Keep us posted Gary.

  • First thing to do is a VIN search to see if the car is in the registry. If it is, then the administrators look to see if we have the owner’s contact info so we can pass along the discovery of the part. We generally receive emails off the main site telling us of a part. We’ve done this several times for engines and transmissions. We've even had someone contact us about a build sheet for a car and luckily we had the owner's email. Talking about the surprise of someone telling you they have your build sheet.

Anyway, when parts with VINs show up, we try to reunite the part with the car. Sometimes people will pay for the part, other times they don’t.

BTW, this VIN is not in the registry.

  • If we ever find the owner of the car these parts belong to I will let the person buy them for exactly what I have in them. Otherwise I will keep them for my own use. It was a very low price IMHO. I just wish there was a way to find out if that car is in fact still around and not destroyed.

What I find incredible is the pristine condition this block and pistons are in. It had to of come from a very low mileage vehicle.

Anyway, if anyone finds out anything please let me know.

    Thanks, Gary

A pristine block with low mileage strongly suggests the possibility of a salvage situation, ie: the original car was crashed and totalled a long time ago, and the drivetrain was saved for some future use.

  • We see so many kars without the correct engine, it would be nice if the registry had a field where that could be noted, both for future sale info and for the purposes posted in this thread.

  • It would alos be helpful to owners with AND without original VIN stamps - the rumor always has been that some weren't stamped - this would be a good way to document very original cars without stamps with their original drivelines - they are out there and these owners shouldn't be penalized due to no VIN stamps.

Hey Gary, did you sneeze when you took that photo (look in upper left)...

No, honestly it is some of the wraping tape. (I Hope!) LOL

    Gary -

Some things are almost certain: Your VIN looks like 5F07K279166. Your VIN is not in the registry. Though it would be very nice to, you will not find a body match or its owner (after all, it is now 2007).

One thing is absolutely certain: You are honorable.

  • Why doesn't the registry entry for 5R07K242883 list it as engine only? It shows all the codes, minus the trim code. I thought this was only done when the complete body exists. Engine only is noted as "@-engine only".

Nearly 700 VINs were listed in the registry prior to putting it online. If the VIN is one of the prior cars, we don't have that info.

  • This topic is a good example why we need a 289 Hipo lost & found forum

quote:
How about adding a Lost & Found forum. Some of these cars are missing that all important numbers matching engine & transmission. This site would be a good place to try and find those misssing hard to find drive train parts. You never know what might turn up.

  • Tom, I agree with you 100% that we need something for lost and found parts etc. I can understand why HPM is reluctant to add this to their site.

Maybe I can add a lost and found site to my server that HPM would provide a link to. I don't know if that is the answer but I am willing to help in any way I can.

Because I'm not convinced it happens often enough.

It's probably a good idea, we just need to determine the most effective way to implement.

Creating a separate section would probably result in a lot of duplicate posts with the items in pricing section. We get enough duplicates already because people don’t use the search before posting. Members could post that they're looking for their block or tranny, but I'm not convinced that would generate a lot of results. A car/owner search when a VIN stamped part is discovered I believe will be more fruitful.

I keep pretty good tabs on posts. Including the blocks and trannys listed in pricing section plus the emails we've received, it's probably only happened about 3 dozen times in almost five years. And maybe half of those have managed to connect a part with the car. When I see a VIN stamped part show up, I ALWAYS check the registry for contact info.

Another option would be to add the capability to contact a member when you do a VIN search to tell them you have their part. But to do that I would have to give the members the option to select whether they want to receive emails. I won’t be able to do that until I set up profiles in the registry. Even then I would be concerned that we stand the chance of some frauds taking place when the communications become private. I think the parts showing up in the eKschange, being scrutinized by the members, and the admins contacting the members is still the best way for now.
