66 k code Australia

  • Pala

As a current importer of a K code after searching for 12 months(due into Brisbane this week ex New York), don't bother looking for a cheap one !

Unless you are a restorer of note, and have the contacts, time and patience, you must be prepared to pay for the model you want.

Research, research, research...the person as well as the car, as you must be comfortable across the entire deal. Whilst nerve-wracking due to the "perils and pitfalls of buying a very expensive 43 year old used car from half way across the world", the experience turned out to be a real pleasure.

The exchange rate is right, plenty of good importers to help you bring it across, plenty of good info on this and other websites (MOCA)...and there ARE good cars out there - eventually.

    Someone's getting excited!!!!<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • i have a factory A code gt coupe, in order to get a K code I have to sell it, but in Australia the classic car market has stalled and I face having my car listed forever like some of the ones on Aussie cAR SITES, i PAYED 34K FOR MINE 2 years , 38 to 40 is a fair price but no body will give you that now. I know Phil well good bloke too have spoken to him

  • Pala

Not sure about the Phil you are referring to ???

I have bought mine with no real thought of resale value as it is a "keeper", other than the fact that we all know good cars will ultimately be worth more as time goes by.

PS At this stage, I am also hanging on to my original car, a C code coupe, so I can say I have a Mustang collection...that's if you can call two cars a collection ???

    Ray

  • i think that Red K at KAR Mustang is fair value.

if one thinks they are going to buy a decent K on the cheap these days you will be waiting not months but years to buy

these K's are in demand and so it reflects in the price they are being sold for

  • Tony

Whilst I said I didn't buy mine with a resale value in mind, it is only human nature to "justify the purchase" so I am glad you agree with me in regard to their appreciating position.

As they say in the classics..."they're not making any more of them".

PS Which State/Town/Suburb of Australia are you in ?

    Ray

  • Hi Ray

im based in Narrabeen Sydney NSW.

I know Ed the guy you bought your car from. You have bought a good clean car... you should be very happy.

  • $4500 to "Strip and repaint entire car"??? That seems too cheap. Has anybody seend a KAR paint job? I have not, but am wondering what you get for $4500. For a show paint job, materials for a strip and paint may cost almost that much.

  • Being in W.A. you are even more isolated than the rest of us in OZ. I suppose that anything that lands on the East coast from the U.S.A. will cost around another $1500 to transport W.A. Around 4 years ago I sold my 68 C code coupe, I intended to wait a few months before buying another Stang. We had just moved it a new home and didn't even have I driveway yet. I was just browsing one day on carsales for mustangs 64-66 when I came across a K code coupe for sale. Anyway I jumped into my old ute and drove to the Entrance which is North of Sydney. As soon as I drove her I was hooked. Put down a deposit then went home and layed down just enough pavers to drive her into the garage.

Don't give up. Chase the dream and live it, life is too short. Wednesday I'm flying to Brisbane to look at a 65 Falcon sprint convertible. Next April I am planning a trip to Vegas for the Mustangs Across America cruise on Route 66. Still don't know how I will pay for all of this but I am determined.

As for selling you're A code. Classics usually take a long time to sell, it's only a very small percentage of the market that are looking. Most of the market are looking at Klugers and Corollas(yuk). You have to be prepared to wait it out. Carsales, carpoint, Ebay, and the Stang clubs are a good start. Sent pics to OZ guys on this site as they may know someone in the market. Cheers Tony.

  • everything you said is true, bought mine from a guy in Nowra sight unseen , had it checked out by a guy who knows his ponys from VIP, he has saved me from buying duds . Put my trust in him they organized everything , and it was as he described. Life is too short your right.

  • $4500 to strip and paint seems way to cheap. I had my car painted about one year ago. car was hit while at a muffler shop, the fender was repaired and repainted, but the colr wasn't quite right. Went back to the insurance co. and had the whole car repainted on their dime for $10,000. they didn't even blink an eye, just ponied up the bucks to have it done.

$4500 sounds like a joke. I had my car totally disassembled and painted by pieces then reassembled.

  • love to see what a 4500 paint job looks like, I can tell you in Australia in Perth just to get the roof done on a friends Firebird he was quoted $6000. Cheaper to have my mustang shipped to Kar painted and returned . You gotta laugh

  • Hey Guys: I just wanted to make a comment about KAR Mustangs in Columbus, Ohio. First, I have no affiliation or interest. But I am familiar with the company and the guys who own it. They are very knowledgeable and very honest. I have visited their shop and have bought parts from them. I have also inspected some of their cars for purchase but have not bought from them. They have been in the Mustang business for many years and have a good reputation. I agree, that $4500 price for a repaint sounds cheap. I would advise not to have someone paint your car a country away. I suggest take delivery of your car as is. If you're not happy with the paint then have a local guy do your work so you can keep an I on the progress. Good luck in your search. I have two K Kars and they are a blast to own and drive.

  • I'm not rubbishing KAR mustang let get that straight, I think they have probably some of the best Mustangs out there and I too know their reputation and they ARE VERY good too, just would like to see what a $4500 paint job looks like
