Child Seat Restraint for Fastback

  • Hi all.

Just wondering if anyone has set up their K Fastback to put a child seat in it? A friend of mine is looking how to go about this.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

this answer won't address your question, but I feel compelled to mention that a child young enough to need a special seat probably shouldn't be a passenger in any vintage car unless there is no other safer (modern) transportation available. I know infants and toddlers rode in vintage iron "back in the day", but that doesn't mean we shouldn't take advantage of the engineering progress of the last 40 years and thereby keep our kids a bit safer. Just my .02 cents...

My friend wants to take his family on the club cruises with him as they joined the club as a family. Just because he has a child shouldn't mean he can't take his wife and child with him any more. It's not like this is a daily driver. I would want to share my passion with my family as well.

See your .02 cents and raise you another .02 cents.

  • Rene,

You apparently have never had to deal with California, and I suspect Texas, lawyers. The answers for both Texas and California is different, so how can a resident of either State answer an Australian question. It's your laws you have to contend with. If you are, or were, required to have right hand drive (I still shutter), how can we answer a down under seat belt question. My 65 fastback still has no rear belts - legally, and a friend's 64 1/2 convertible was retrofitted by California laws to get front belts because the laws were changed somewhere when along the line. All I can say is, check with local law enforcement (I can't believe I'm saying that).

  • Hi Jim.

I understand ever country/state has different laws and regulations. All I'm trying to find out is if someone has put a child seat in a Fastback and how they did the anchor point. You'll be happy to know, my K is left hand drive and can legally be driven without seatbelts.

    Thanks though.

  • Only in the front seat, until the law required kids in safety seats to be sitting in the rear. I do not know of any manufacturer that catered to 1965 or 66 Mustang Fastbacks in the design of kids seats under the new laws. I'm not being rotten or arbitrary, the 'kid' I had to worry about is taller than me (6 foot plus) and gets his learners permit sometime next week. He WILL not drive my 'K' car until he is 35.

    You're being very generous.

  • Hi René,

Interesting topic, I am also wondering how I can safely accomodate my 2 kids in the konvertible for the occasional week end ride with the top down [Blocked Image: http://www.hipomustang.com/cgi-bin/cars/5F08K617591-14.jpg]

Fastbacks are a little different due to the fold down seat I guess, but there may be some kits available for them as well.

The other solution for your mate is to install a 3 point seatbelt on the passenger seat and stick his wife on the back seat lol <img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • I've had a set of front three point belts in my 66 hardtop for about 9 or 10 years, I was one of the first customers of the So Cal shop that put the kit together. One of my neighbors has an 'approved' child's car seat and we tried to figure a way to use it. Couldn't do it. But (but he said), that seat would go in the rear using the standard rear belts. I imagine that the same seat could be used in a 66 Fastback with factory rear belts, and a 65 Fastback with the optional ones installed. Remember, in California we got more laws to protect us from ourselves than anywhere else in the world.

  • In the rear seat of a fastback? Mind doesn't have seatbelts or provisions for one. If yours does, and you can get your hands behind the childseat area where they attach, use that.

In my 'vert I had to replace the rear factory belts with aftermarket ones so I could change the click point off to one side instead of in the center (belly button). No other way to get the car seat in there.

  • US laws did not require rear seat belts until 1967 although California required them in 1966. Most manufacurers put in rear belts in 1966 cars anyway. In 1965, rear belts were optional.

Zray no offence but in my book, if someone is old enough to look at me with a sparkle in the eyes, a huge smile and say "Daddy I wanna ride in your Mustang !" then he/she's got a ticket <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

Troy can you post or send me a pic of your aftermarket seat belts in the vert ?

    no offense taken.

But I was referring to infants & toddlers (see post) who are more at risk in a crash than children two years of age and older. So when they're old enough to say, "Daddy I wanna ride in your Mustang !".... then I say, "strap 'em in."
