Standard car with interesting stripes. VIN stamp is funky and missing the stars. GM style air cleaner, unknown distributor and correct harmonic balancer. Judging by the fuel line the carb is most likely a dual feed Holley. Fan appears to be correct. Battery must be in the trunk.

  • The vin numbers look larger than factory. Homemade vin stamping? Metal distorts in at stamping. Question: Were the vin #' stamped in the loose aprons prior to body assembly, or when body was already assembled and coming down the line? If the latter, they must have used some type of body buck under each stamping to prevent distortion of the metal.

  • I have had several cars where the VIN was stamped covering both the front apron and the shock tower at the same time. This is both the hidden and non hidden ones on different cars. I have no doubt that they were stamped after the body structure was welded together.

  • From some people I know that worked at the San Jose plant, the VIN stamping was done on a device that looked like a changable rubber date stamp, the type with several 'rolls' of numbers, but heavy duty. The info came from the build sheet and the letters and numbers were 'rolled' into position. There was a backing plate so the stamping penetrated thru the other side as you may have seen. There had to have been a depth guage but I have seen a few cars with the two hidden numbers exposed, including a Shelby.
