4 digit number on hipo heads. What do they mean?

  • I have been in contact with someone with 4G9 date code hipo heads. they have been ported on their exhaust ports for what looks like Tri Y headers. they have the stamp 3214 below the freeze plugs.

My question is, how did Valley Head Service mark their heads. Did they just stamp a number on them. I have a picture of this stamping but I can't post it to the site. Could these be gt350 heads.

IMHO most likely someone else's work. The VHS heads I've seen from the period had the full name stamped on the head (on the lip where the valve cover would rest.

Mondellos did the same thing -different location of the stamping though

  • Generally numbers, other than known Ford numbers, that are stamped on blocks heads and cranks are used by shops as a job number to keep the customers parts together. This system is used by many rebuilders. When I ran the shop at Valley Head Service, this was a normal practice. Jeff is also correct that Valley Head Service always identified heads that they ported with their Valley Head Service stamp.

  • Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't the comp Cobras fitted with earlier heads? Or were they 65 castings...? And would you comment [ anyone ] on the porting job on these heads...and would they look like the GT 40 LeMans heads.<img src=images/icon_smile_shy.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Generally the heads that were ported by Valley Head Service, Mondello and Crane had both intake and exhaust ports done. It is quite unusual on these heads to only have the exhaust ports done. Back when Valley Head Service was doing these heads for Shelby in 1966 I watched the porting being done. Being as I was much younger then, I was quite impressed with the process. The exhaust ports are very close to water and I have several door stops (heads) sitting around here that prove that point as they are leakers. I have seen a number of these heads where the exhaust ports were ported too far and leak. I actually have a head from Valley Head Service that was used by them to test the limits of porting and it is one of the leakers. I am not saying that the heads in the auction are likely to leak but I would certainly want to have them pressure tested.
