Exhaust question...

  • I guess I should have worded my question differently. What I'm trying to find out is... did they drill all the cars (as the default) for the transverse muffler, then if the car was made with dual exhaust, were the dual exhaust mounting holes additional. Or... if the car was made with dual exhaust, were the transverse muffler exhaust mounting holes never made?

    Does that help?

    Thanks,

    John Thomas

  • Ah - I think I see what you're asking. Let me try to clarify, tell me if I'm wrong:

You are talking about a single exhaust with transverse muffler versus a car with dual exhaust. The confusion comes in because there was also a Hipo dual exhaust system with transverse muffler.

So you are asking if dual exhaust cars (whether hipo or not) had the mounting holes drilled for the single exhaust transverse muffler, which had a hanger on the driver's side framerail.

That's a hilarious question to ask me, because my hipo car later had a standard single-exhaust motor swapped in. So in addition to all of the dual transverse/Arvinode systems' exhaust mountings I also have the single transverse muffler hanger. I coudn't tell you if those mounting holes were put there at the factory but I wouldn't be surprised. Mine's an early '65.

  • The unibody for dual exhaust cars has several differences compared to single exhaust cars. They include hanger locations and the location of the rear brake hose, and maybe the style of rear axle bumper plate used. This would have been one of the first things the assembly line workers needed to know when setting up the platform of the unibody.

I believe that the buck tag would also denote that unibody was set up for dual exhaust with the code "DE"

So in answer to the OP's question, I think that single and dual exhaust unibodies are two seperate animals.

That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out. Thanks for clarifying... maybe the right question is did all cars start out as if they would be single exhaust cars, then the dual exhaust stuff added and the brake line mount installed as appropriate?

  • Should be an easy one to get an answer to. Just need a few of the '65 guys to take a look at inboard side of their driver's side framerail.

No, the rear build up with reinforcements was unique only to dual exhaust cars... starting with a K code and then carrying over to A code GT's too.

I got that part figured out, but would a dual exhaust car also have the mounting holes for the single exhaust muffler bracket?

Is the car you are asking about a K code?

No, I'm making a GT350 clone and didn't know if the single exhaust holes should be welded up or left alone.
