Engine transfer identification help please

  • hi everyone.

I'm from chile and i received an engine from a cousin as a gift. Its a Ford V8. I'm planning a complete overhaul to it, so first i need to identify it. The number on the block is a 0 C5AE-6015E 6J15, and i took out the valve cover and says 289 HP. It has a Shelby intake manifold and the original exhaust but broken. what else should i take care at? it has the original 4 gear toploader transmission.

you can check some pics at http://www.flickr.com/arriero4x4

    thanks a lot

  • PICS LEAD TO BELIEVE , STD 289 EX MANIFOLDS NON HIPO , NON HIPO DISTRIBUTOR , NON HIPO ALTERNATOR MORE THAN LIKELY STD 289 ENGINE WITH ALUM INTAKE

  • It does appear to possibly have a C8ZE harmonic balancer. If it says 289 HP under the valve covers, these could be C8ZE service Hipo heads. The C8ZE heads would have plugs in the heads for the air injection tubes. The header gasket may be covering those plugs.

  • Luis,

Did your cousin know what type of car the engine came out of. Curious to know what type of car you plan to put this engine in when it is rebuilt?

    Welcome

    Ray

  • Yep, it says C8ZE in between the valves. It also says 289 and HP. For i've read and compaired, it doesnt have a hipo distributor nor exaust. Next week i plan to take out the oil pan and valve train.

My cousin toldme it was a 302 from a 76 or so mustang. But the casting numbers in the block says another thing (think so) The car wrecked some 15 years ago in a desert race competition in the north of Chile. I also hace the toploader transmission.

How do i put pictures in here?

    sorry for my english...

    thanks

  • Although they are the least deisirable of the Hipo heads, the engine does have the C8ZE service replacement versions. The harmonic balancer appears to be a 68 standard 302 one rather than the possible C8ZE replacement one that I originally thought. That is an interesting large diameter dual alternator pulley.

  • Ok guys, i finally took out the heads. they are froma 289HP, but the block says just 289. although it say HP at the back but painted. The heads have some letters and numbers below. donno if this mean something. The engine has NO "play" in the cylinders. the valves are "sitting" thight. this weekend i'll take out the oil pan. I need to change the water pump (must).

    any advise? its a HiPo??

    thanks, bye

  • I checked the transmission, it has the original one. It's a toploader 4, and it still have the letters in the tag. It says something like RUC N 1 or RUG N 1.

is this helpfull for the identification of the engine?

    thanks

    arriero

  • The RUG-N1 trans is a 67 Hipo trans which helps add credibility to your other potential Hipo stuff.

    • Official Post

The short block does appear to be a 67 Hipo one. I cannot see the part of the rear counterweight that I need to verify the crank. It would not surprise me to find a VIN on the block. It would be good to find out the numbers on the harmonic balancer.
