How to Check VIN Under Passenger Fender?

  • Is there an easy way to at least see part of the VIN that's stamped under the passenger side fender on a Mustang? Maybe loosening some of the bolts on the fender will gain enough room to shine a flashlight in there? Or does the outer fender absolutely have to come off to see the VIN stamp?

    Thanks

you can try to make a tracing from underneath. Otherwise all the bolts have to come out and the fender pulled forward & to the side a couple of inches.

  • If the area at the rear of the wheel well is clean and has no undercoating, you may be able to see the VIN by using a flashlight and a mirror, otherwise the fender has to come off. There is a third stamped number on the left hand fender apron in roughly the same place as the one on the right side, also hidden by the fender.

  • Thanks Jim. So there are three places where the VIN is stamped on the body? I thought there was only two. One that is clearly visible on the top of the driver side wheel well and one that is roughly in the same place on the passenger side, but is hidden by the fender. Where exactly is the third place? You mention at the rear of the wheel well? Which wheel well and exactly where?

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Both hidden VIN's are in the same place on opposite sides about 8 to 10 inches in front of the rear edge of the hood, a little in front of the hood hinge. If you were lucky, the VIN gets stamped out of place and can be partially visible. I saw a GT-350 'R' model last week with the VIN and the stamped Shelby VIN both visibe on the right hand side.
