Timing Cover Restoration

  • Start with water from a garden hose to get rid of the big chunks. Then try some paint thinner with a parts cleaner brush if you don't have a parts cleaning tank or know of someone who does. I've used a paint remover called Krud Kleaner available from the paint dept. at Home Depot. Don't use Eazy-Off Oven Cleaner (for an extended period of time) or bead blast as the soft aluminum gets eaten away. An exception is using a bead blaster on the inside water passages to get the scale removed.

  • There are a number of ways to do this. Super Clean, (Walmart) works great to cut the grease, just don't leave it on the cover for too long. Simple green also works and is harmless. A shop that does carburetor cleaning usually has a cold tank that will make it look like new. Careful glass beading, a new seal and a coat of paint and you should be good to go.

  • i use 'Simple Green'

to clean the under belly of my Cessna 170A.

this is an area that oil likes to accummulate

and is very hard to get to and get off.
