Toot my own horn

  • May I suggest that everyone carry a fire extinguisher with them.

While cruising around town today I came up behind the car pictured below while it was experiencing an engine fire. Someone else was already waving wildly at him to pull over and he did so just in time. The owner popped the hood and I was able to put out the fire before A LOT more damage was done. The fire truck showed up about 5 minutes later.

  • Yes indeed...It used to mandatory to have a fire extinguisher to enter most car shows. It seems the mandate has been slowly relaxed to the point where it is less common to see it specified on entry forms these days.

  • That's a good recommendation. I'll put a fire extinguisher in the car when I drive on oldie.

What caused the fire, gas or wiring? I try to remember to check my cars very frequently for gas leaks. I disconnect the negative battery cable from most cars when I park them for any length of time. I've seen cars and garages burned up by wiring fires.

In addition to carrying a fire extinguisher, here's another recommendation I follow after experiencing a scary wiring fire under the dash while driving a 57 T-Bird I used to own: I always have the negative battery cable nut only finger tight so it can be removed in a hurry if needed. A crescent wrench in the glove box is also a good idea.
