    NO OVERSPRAY ??

No over spray where? If you're referring to the outer inner fender/firewall area, then you must not have read that this is a San Jose car.

Thoroughbred Shelby first car to win the MCA Authenticity Award! San Jose Fastback Shelby GT350 restored by Shane, Its also won all of the SAAC awards as well... Just look at that overspray... Looks correct to me! How is that possible???

  • It is fairly common knowledge that San Jose cars were completely blacked out on the outer part of the inner fenders. If you've ever restored a SJ car and cleaned the outer inner fender area, it would be very obvious. Unfortunately, your reference pics are those of a restored car. While the person that restored the car is knowledgeable, this is one detail that is flat out wrong. Unless they had compelling evidence, this car would have points deducted for incorrect color patterns in the front inner fender area. Most definitely would have points deducted at SAAC.

Here is a properly restored '65 GT350, done by a very knowledgeable SAAC Judge: http://www.thecoralsnake.com/History8

And for what it's worth, here are pictures of the areas in question of the '65 K convertible before it was stripped down:

The whitish areas are the sound deadening that was exposed outside from the fenders being off.

    How is that possible?

Fairly easy - First its a restored car and not an original one.

Secondly cars that win these awards are rarely if ever prefect (no point deductions) and often receive point deductions. If the the number of points deductions allow them to reach preset limits they take home the award - EVEN with mistakes and deductions.

What you show in the pictures is the typical restoration of a San Jose car restored in the north midwest - with many details borrowed from Dearborn cars. This can be seen repeated over and over again on cars at auctions and on Ebay.

I can think of a 66 GT350 that won Gold at SAAC in Division I and at MCA in Thoroughbred also a couple years ago. It was also featured in Mustang Monthly. On that car the rear wheelwells were finished incorrectly (sound deadener was applied as the final coat there) and it remains that way today. Of course I'm sure that some viewed the car at the shows or in the magazine and for some reason assume that since it won these award its safe to copy every last detail off of the car to theirs.

One of the reasons to focus on when and where a car was assembled in forums like this is to put an end to the mixing and matching from one plant to another that as repeated itself over and over through the years.

Not sure when all of these awards were won. But if this car did not win the SAAC awards last year ( sorry I missed the show due to a scheduling problem) I deducted for those wheelwells. If it was done last year I would be disappointed if the other judges didn't either.

Can provide plenty of original front wheel well pictures from the same time period and plant. Have tens of thousands of them

Hope this helps in some little way

  • was the black out on engine compartment panels only ???. as your pic of right cowl and torx looks like theres body paint {spot welds and seams or was it coverd with sound deadner ???.

  • Here are a few shots of other San Jose cars built around the same time

OF course there will always be exceptions to the normal practice (workers missing, skipping an area) but always be prepared with documentation if you choose to return your car that way. Checking my pictures I've got one 65 San Jose front wheelwell that is different than what we normally see. Car is numbered about 10,000 units earlier than Mr Turner's convertible.

As mentioned the sound deadener turns white with age and with exposure to sunlight - likely IMHO to the asbestos used in the product
