Vendor recommendations

  • While putting together a wish list of parts for my current project, I've been looking at various catalogs. Prices highly variable for same parts and some vendors carry Ford tooling parts of certain items that others don't even mention.

What do you all recommend? I noticed VA Mustang seems to have better pricing than NPD on some items, but are the items really any different? I have to go to other places to get other parts they don't have. Sure makes things fun! Any obsucre parts vendors for the good stuff at reasonable pricing you can all share? Right now I'm only concerned with underhood items and such.

Anybody ever try a reproduction hood molding for a '66 Mustang? NPD and VA list a cheap one for under $15. I've also seen expensive $45 ones elsewhere? I also noticed VA Mustang has a new overlay that goes ON TOP of the current pitted console inserts. Still a bit pricey, but maybe they work OK? Any experience with these pieces?

  • I usually use either NPD or Va. Mustang. There are different brands of parts which you can inquire about when you order. In NC, I have to pay sales tax if I buy from NPD, so I find myself ordering from Va Mustang more often. Get all your fasteners directly from the AMK website where you can order online. Also, Va. Mustang has online ordering which I prefer, NPD does not.

Always go for the higher quality when it's offered, do not go after cheapest price. Try to obtain NOS Ford when you can, especially for the soft metal parts like hood lip moldings and grille moldings.

I agree with everything that Charles says and will add that, if you need a rebuilt steering box, "Dallas Mustang" is the answer.

  • my added opinion to this topic is, most reputable Mustang parts places buy a lot of product from similar sources. Scott Drake supply's many with the concourse items. Being on the west coast, I buy from Mustangs Plus of Stockton. It helps that they are local, but heres the gotcha when dealing with Mustang vendors. After the sale satisfaction. If the product you buy is not what was represented, or what meets your expectation, do the various vendors work with you. I don't mind paying a bit more if the service is beyond normal expectations. I've also dealt with VA Mustang and NPD. All are curtious and do their best to get you the product you're asking for.

  • I've run into a part problem with Mustangs Unltd. lately when I needed a dual exhaust brake line body bracket. Their price was $5.95

and what they sent me was an 1/8" thick, 1 1/8" wide strap with a

round hole for the brake line connector hold down. I immediately

called them and said I was sending back their "bracket" and wanted

my money back as I could have made the same thing for pennies and

wouldn't be any farther from original than their part. Got my money

back AND the part as it would have cost them more to ship it back

than it was worth. At least they were ok with realizing some of their parts aren't close to original!

Charles, other than a junkyard of classics, where can I get the above

bracket to change my V-8 single, crosswise muffler to a true

dual muffler with the full length dual muffler brake line?

    Thanks for any source.
