It is my understanding that ALL 1965 K engines that were obviously black from the factory would have had GOLD bases on the chrome air cleaner....I thought I read somewhere that sometime in '65 the went to the BLUE ahead of time, my car was built in LATE JULY 1965.

Acording to Tony's book, 4th edition on page 46 at the bottom it says that "ALL '65 cars with BLACK engines used the GOLD base.
This is what I am basing my opinion on.....anyone have a LATE 1965 that they are running a BLUE base air cleaner on??

I have a 66 Metuchen K code (april 66) that came original with a gold base not blue. Its been in the family since new.

I have a Jan. '65 San Jose car with a blue base. Appears to have been original.

This is very interesting so far....a 1966 with a GOLD base, and a 1965 with a BLUE base, sure is conflicting with what is printed in our "Bible" and I must say I've seen more BLUE bases at the shows than the GOLD, the one we are trying to use IS a repro that IS BLUE and we are going to paint it the GOLD......I think...

How sure are you that this is the original base? Got to ask since it's allot older than the car. Jan 65 verses April 66 = 15 months sure does not look like the typical date spread IMHO

My dad bought the car new and its never been changed.

Interesting. From what I've observed the supply of 5A dated bases lasted well into 66 production until the 6A dated bases started showing up. The original base on my late March 66 San Jose car is dated 6C so I would expect an April 66 car to have something like that. I can think of several scenarios how your car got a 5A base but probably something we'll never know for sure.......

There was a discussion of this topic a couple of years ago. There were definitely some blue bases on early cars; the all gold rule has been found to be flawed. The 5A base, in particular, has been found in both gold and black. I'll dig around for the earier item in the archive.
