  • are you wanting to use spray bomb? or are you mixing paint in a sprayer? What level of restoration are you looking to do? For my driver, I had great luck with Krylon Rust Tough semi flat black - not sure if it's up to concours trailer quality, though (:

Sure was easy to use and apply and touch up. 2 years going strong, and still looks new.

  • Very nice looking engine compartment..thank you so much for responding and posting those pics..we tried the spray paint and that came out crappy..it has all been chemically stripped back down to metal ...we want to have it done from a spray gun...we are going for a concourse show finish/factory look..so we were trying to figure out was it a flat black or semi gloss black..or was it a ford specific black?? I am of the mind its more of a flat black?? or a flat with the slightest gloss?? Just not sure but its going to be a show car..

Troy - just couldn't bring yourself to spray a generous and sloppy dose of concours correct sound deadener on that nice firewall, could you?

Nah, don't worry - I left some there - a little here and there around the heater box/under, the MC, and on the bottom curve that goes under the car by the accelerator linkage. You know, all the areas I couldn't scrape easy enough with the engine in place (:

But what about generous and sloppy doses of factory paint runs on the shock towers? Does anybody try and replicate that??<img src=images/icon_smile_sleepy.gif border=0 align=middle>

Yep, replicate it if I find original runs on the car I'm restoring.

  • DDL9423 was a lacquer mix. As far as I know, PPG has discontinued the DDL paint line. Might check with your local re-finish supply store and see if they can cross-reference it. Basically, though, you want something around 30% flattened, which can be achieved with pretty much any brand of paint.

so is there a consensus on the right color and brand to shoot our front end with that will be correct for judging..

Not really as there could be variations from the assembly plant. Generally, though, 30% flattened black is acceptable. Personally, I have had good luck with using DP90LF epoxy primer with .5 reducer added. The reducer allows it to dry out to a nice sheen. I did this engine bay about a month ago with DP:
