Dearborn Radiator ID???

  • On Saturday I'm off to the annual Daytona Turkey Run show and will be looking for a "correct" radiator for my JULY 1965 DEARBORN built K (manual trans) my question is can someone please tell me where the part number/date code is located on these radiators? anyone have a picture of this? ANYONE HAVE A RADIATOR THAT WILL WORK FOR MY KAR???

    THANKS!!!!

  • I'm now getting conflicting reports on the DEARBORN radiators: In this months Mustang Monthly there is a restorer guy whos name escapes me right now but he states that the DEARBORN radiators have the ROUNDED TABS on the top, and I'm hearing that this info is wrong....is there a repro/aftermarket/replacement unit that is close avalable? I didn't find anything at Daytona BTW execpt well over 1,000 vehicles for sale in this bad economy.

Dearborn radiators do not have rounded tabs, here's a pic of a rebuilt original:

I am not aware of a replacement that looks anywhere close.

That was Murf in the article.

  • I contacted the technical advisor from M/M about the pictures being reveresed and I hope they will correct this. I know Murf and don't think this is what he stated.

  • To make things clear, all of the Dearborn AND New Jersey radiators in the 65 - 66 cars I have observed have the square tabs. The engineering number and the date for the Dearborn and New Jersey radiators are stamped on the LEFT (drivers) side support and when installed on a car can be found facing the motor and on a horizontal plane with the voltage regulator. The date stamped on the support is read as follows: YEAR - MONTH - WEEK> A=week 1, etc and when you find an occasional "E" that month had a couple of days in the fifth week of the month. It is this "fifth week" stamping that seems to confuse some folks. The rounded tabs have been on all of the original SJ radiators I have observed, and in addition to "W MO" the date is reversed stamped in one of the flats on the top tank. As far as the letters used on the radiators - GI, Y1 Y2 and others I have no clue as to what is what. Each time it looks as if we have found the Rosetta Stone for this stamp someone soon disproves the theory. This information does not apply to the somewhat obscure

"desert cooler" radiator that sometimes surfaces. It is a unique creature. It is unfortunate that these photos were mixed up when this article was printed - once something appears in print it becomes difficult to un-do the mis-information. Again, MM is aware of the reversed images.

  • The Ford engineering drawings that I found for the 1965 Dearborn/NJ (square tab) radiator show a G suffix for V8, manual transmission. Kevin Marti's tagbook shows G & Y suffix for 1965 260/289 manual transmission.

  • Murf

People know you well enough here and over on the VMF that you won't be held accountable for a typo or editorial boo boo.<img src=images/icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • Tom - If you should find anything on the fabled "desert" radiator I'd welcome the info. It gets hot as hell where I live and if I could find one in the scrap yard today I wouldn't know what it was.......

  • I have found a radiator with the C4ZE-8005 (so far) and its a manual trans radiator.....I believe it is an original FOMOCO unit from either Dearborn or Metuchen plant....I also believe its from a 6 cylinder application 1964-1965.....I know the lower hose outlet is on the wrong side-(this can be changed) and 1 or both outlets are smaller than the V8 are.....I believe these can be changed as well...I can get this radiator very reasonably so I'll have some room to work with a nearly correct radiator to start with....

Is there something I am missing as to how a laymen (not me) could distinguish between a V8 & 6cyl. application with this C4ZE-8005 number on it?
