I'm trying to find out what the best way/method of cleaning up my timing cover, intake manafold, and oil pan for re-painting/restoration: I somehow don't think sandblasting is the right way espessely on the timing cover and oil pan--I also need to do the bell housing and fan spacer, Thanks!
Media blasting engine parts??

If you have a machine shop local, you can pay them to soak the parts in their cleaning vats which will usually remove all grease, dirt and paint.
On some items, you will need to media blast. Like the oil pan, brackets, pulleys, etc...

I have done soaking in degreasers and it does break down the grease well. Another way that I do it is with a hot steam cleaner. Yet another way is to use a pressure washer hooked up to hot water. I'm sure you'll find a satisfactory way of doing it.

My former boss used Easy Off oven cleaner on his 1939 Lincoln Zephyr and 1961 T-bird. Depending on how bad the crud is, it works well.

Oven cleaner is definitely the way to go on cast iron parts like crankshafts, connecting rods & engine blocks.
