Original dealer key rings??

  • Does anyone remember what type dealer key rings Ford used back in the 60s when our cars were new? I think it would be neat to have a couple of these to put keys on for shows...

  • The normal key ring is just the cheap wire ring that comes on the lock and key sets today. They would have the metal tags on them for the key codes although some dealers would have deleted them as they were also entered in the original owners manual when the car was delivered to the customer. Some dealers, of course, had their own key rings and key fobs advertising their dealership. I have a dealer special made one from a Ford dealer when my parents bought a new 1960 Ford station wagon.

  • The one that came with my Dad's NEW 1965 Fairlane 500 was made of leather that had a foldover so you could put your key inside and snap it shut. On one side, it had the dealer name(Edwards Ford)address(Dallas Ave, Lancaster, TX) and a Ford badge logo on it. They made the outside cover in different colors so you could get one close to the color of your car. My Dad's was GREEN; the car was Tahoe Turquoise. Will try to find it.

  • Fred, I almost forgot about the small metal tags with the key codes on them....I wonder if anyone is re-making these?? Do you think that the cheapie key rings had the paper-like labels with them that had spaces for year, make, model, stock#, color, ect?? and might they have been white or yellow? I've done a search and found both in the type I think you are speaking of.

  • Most NOS lock sets will have the metal rings with the keys.

Have a friend whose grandfather bought a 64.5 convertible in the Spring of '64. He has the original key fob, which was one of those leather flip style that snaps the extra keys inside. Don't remember if it had the dealer logo on it.

  • Yes, I have my dad's from when he had a 1957 Ford Fairlane. It was brown leather folded over with extra clips for more keys. I have a NOS one that is similar and has the California dealer name embossed in gold. Very nice. You can find them on Ebay from time to time. The leather is good too as it will not scratch the paint on the dash when swinging around. It is a nice detail to have as well. Just as am FYI, the keys to my dad's 1957 also work on my Mustang. Weird, but prolly cause they are so worn.

  • The tags with the key code are metal and come on all NOS sets and single locks. Ford did not use the paper tags. Those are usually done by the dealer to keep track of the keys in their key racks. I may even have some extra metal tags if you are just gong for the tag look. Nobody will check the code to see if it actually matches your key. <img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
