• I will be putting the K away for the winter in another 6 weeks or so. I typically put 1,500 miles or so on the kar during the season but will probably have only around 800 miles on it this year before it goes into storage. I use Mobil 1 15-50w oil and one of those $33 repo red Rotunda filters and alaways change the oil and filter prior to putting it up in November. I was wondering if I can safely get away without changing the oil and filter this year and leave what is in there for another season. Not trying to skimp on the $65 oil change, just wondering and looking for some expert advise on if it is really necessary with such little use this year and Mobil 1 in the crankcase.

  • You are putting so few miles on the car that it shouldn't be a problem. Fueld systems are more likely to be a problem in the long term; I put in fuel stabilizer and top of the tank at the end of each season, then start the car and let it run for a good period of time once or twice a month during the winter.

  • Take the car for a good run and change the oil right after while the "dirt" is still suspended. Don't change the filter if you don't want to. Fuel stabilizers are a good idea. If you plan on starting the car over the winter, make sure you let the exhaust pipes get good and hot before you shut the car off, so that the exhaust water does not condense on the pipes/mufflers and rust them out. Also, I always put mouse traps in the garage as the critters seem to like to hide out in the garage during the cold months.

  • Thanks guys. I always fill the tank and use fuel stabilizer and the car is not started up at all during the winter, just sits under the car cover until April. Other things I also do are using a half dozen or so marine (large size) dessicant bags scattered throught the interior to absorb moisture and a bar of Irish Spring soap under each seat (mice supposedly do not like the scent) I also put the sunvisors in the down position as I have 2 friends who had the top of the visors chewed when they were left up.

  • You should be ok on the oil issue, IMHO,but I would put PRI-G in the tank, it will really keep things in the fuel system from going bad, and I would run it for a while with a good dose in the tank. I will be doing it to my cars and boats for the winter. Anyone else?

  • While not a true show car, I do have fun showing the car locally and have the engine compartment pretty nicely detailed with all of the correct bits and pieces (battery/cables/hoses/belts/decals etc.) and the Rotunda filter just finishes it off. I have never used PRI-G - is it that much better than sta-bil?

  • I drive my 67 in Sweden about two weeks per year and change oil and filter every second year. Have it on jackstands and a friend charging the battery. Always leave it with a full tank of gas.

Nothing added. When I am back in Sweden in June every year I

disconnect the high voltage wire between the distributor cap and coil and let it go on the starter until oil pressure is up. Then

I connect the wire and start it. Only problem I have had for

more than 20 years is a leaking carb a couple of times.

  • Your gas must be of a higher quality than ours, I have first hand experience with old gas " gumming up the works ". The small filter at the carb has filled up in a short time aftr the gas sat a year, even with new gas added.

  • My 67 over there sits in a heated garage.

Not hot but maybe around 60 degrees F.

The same with the front brakes. I have never removed

the front brakes on the car in the 31.5 years I owned

it. Only new pads and in 1978 I put in Dow Corning

silicone brake fluid into it with just a thorough

bleeding to get all old fluid out. Rear brake cylinders

have been replaced once when I just added more of the same fluid from the same bottle I bought 30 years ago.

For the last 21 years I have driven the car about 500-1000

miles a year when I am over there on vacation.

    Love that car with a 65 HiPo (Aug 64 built date)engine and a 67

    Close Ratio T&C HEH-BX trans.
