Being as this Kar was originally an automatic transmission Kar, would it have had a VIN stamped trans? If so, where would it be stamped? I am restoring a similar Kar right now for someone else that was a San Jose build.

Has there been a cloud established on the Kar or not?? I am wondering about the drivetrain... is it even a hipo bottom end or not?? A guy needs to know this, can anyone go see the Kar and report his/her findings? For such a nice loooking KAr, the veracity of the equipment [ engine, etc.] needs to be answered, not just " he said she said... pull a valve cover, check the carb, etc. To replace the engine with a correct hipo is not cheap, parts and labor could run it up to what? $6000 or more....it adds up and a good engine builder is not cheap either... A price with the cloud removed would be more likely to bring near the buy it now....but with the cloud, no way....
Based upon the limited photos in the ad I highly question if the original HiPo block and C-4 Auto are still there.
It has a regular 289 damper - this is a dead give away that the bottom end is wrong.
Casting number mentioned in the add doesn't help - ALL 289 blocks had the same casting number - without a serial number stamp on the block and tranny there is no way to say it is original.
This one needs a very close visual inspection before any money changes hands. Too many questions and incorrect "restoration" stuff to pay big money for this car.
I am reposting this from my previous post as I am still trying to find an answer. Being as this Kar was originally an automatic transmission Kar, would it have had a VIN stamped trans? If so, where would it be stamped? I am restoring a similar Kar right now for someone else that was a San Jose build.
