intake and exhaust option for k-codes?

  • Hi folks,

I have a 65 k-code and was told by the previous owner that the intake manifold and exhaust headers on this car were a factory or dealer installed option (different than regular k-codes) and are the same as on a GT 350? Does anyone know anything about this? Also what carburator was installed on K-codes?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Welcome to the HPMX!!!! You could possibly have DEALER INSTALLED Tri-Y headers, but your K code came from the factory with ITS own Special, (unique to Hipo 289s) cast iron exhaust manifolds.

Youe engine would have been equipped from the factory with an Autolite 4100 series 1.12 venturi manual choke 4v carburetor, (also unique to the Hipo 289s)Your intake manifold came from the factory as a cast iron piece also used on the standard 4v 289s, nothing special on these, don't know what type or brand of intake you have but there were DEALER INSTALLED 2X4s and 3X2s available....

  • Thanks for the replies.

Yes it has the "Tri-Y" headers. The intake manifold has some sort of part # in the casting towards the back. It is kind of faint and hard to read but it looks like SFJD ?25P and it also has "Shelby" cast in the very front. I was told that this is the same on that came on GT 350s? Last owner said in this configuration it was supposed to make 300 HP. The carburator is a Holly 45482310...I guess that is not original?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks,

How common or desirable is the Shelby intake manifold and the tri-y headers? Theoretically would this have been a 300hp combination?

  • Didn't the Shelby's also get the LeMans cam too?? or a different cam than the standard Hipo unit?

Wasn't the hp on the Shelby's rated at 306??

no. Only the 1965 competition models, now commonly referred to as R models (race model GT-350's) received a different cam. It was the S1CR road racing camshaft. The heads were also reworked as well as other engine modifications. The competition models were dyno tested and measured between 325 and 360 horsepower with a single 4 barrel carb.

But they were few in number (only 36 were built). Street GT-350 cams were unchanged.

no. Shelby sold various cam over the counter. But they were not installed by Shelby in street '65 & '66 GT-350's.

yes. increase over the Hi-Po advertised 271 HP was attributed to intake & exhaust system changes. No internal engine changes.

  • Fred see the original post for this thread....

1965 K-code GT, with tri-y headres and Shelby intake manifold with corresponding Holly carburator and 7 quart oilpan. Body and motor are original. Very good original condition

  • If you actually are looking to sell the car, I would think a post in the for sale section with a brief description and maybe a couple pics would give you a lot more exposure and a much better chance of finding an interested buyer. Just my 2 pennies worth <img src=images/icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
