65-66 rear axle change over?

  • G'day Everyone

According to the 4th addition book the 65 diff pumpkin was round and the 66 was more flat with an extension for the ring gear.

What ball park time did this change happen?

I'm looking at a May02 1966 vehicle that looks to have the 65 style.

  • The changeover was October 1, 1965 according to the Ford master part catalog. There, of course, will be some variance from this as the older stock is used up. Your May 2, 1966 date is way too far off for a variance. How sure are you that the housing is even a Mustang housing?

  • The pictures of the center part of the housing to the axle tubes appears correct for the early housing. You need to have a picture towards the rear spring mounts to see if there is a taper in the axle tubes. Even if there is, you probably have an incorrect housing for your build date. The snubber bracket on the third member is also the early version and incorrect for your production date.

  • Thanks Fred
