Red or Gold Rotunda oil filter???

  • I need to know what color Rotunda 6000 mile reproduction oil filter I should put on my July 1965 built "K" engine?? Red or Gold?? and where I could possible buy a correct looking sleeve to install on a plain late model motorcrafy FL-1A that can be bought at Wal-Mart??

I'm thinking that the GOLD one is more correct for such a late production '65??

  • Neither are correct for "from the factory". Original would have been painted block color. Which one to choose.... well, that depends on when the first oil change was and how many filters the dealer had in stock. I would expect to see the red one on a 65, even as late as yours.

The hardest part in matching original is the double crimp which both have. I don't know where you can find any readily available aftermarket filters. I for one would like to find a source for these at less cost than the repos offered just to paint block color. $30 for what is probably a substandard oil filter is ludicrous.

  • All the 65's I've seen (mine included) have the red Rotunda. The NPD site mentions the red being for 65's.

It is, and yet I still buy it, and for more than $30 USD being down under

  • Have you guys attempted to remove the repo can off the filter so it could be reused on another replacement filter. I'm guessing that they are using one of the short Toyota filters with the other slipped over it.

Have a FL-2 that I did this with a number of years back. Just can't do anything about the little seam at the base :( The new cans are not likely as heavy (thickness of the metal and construction) as the original one I have

Might be worth a try since your thoring it out anyway. Just a thought

  • If you are showing the car in MCA events in the concours classes it should be black. When the motors moved down the assembly line the filter and manifolds were in place. Everything was painted black at the same time including: bypass hose, carb spacer, edges of the exhaust manifolds where they meet the heads, water pump and timing cover, and the oil filter.

If you're OK with looking at a black filter, then you can also get the Motorcraft racing filter and paint it black. It has a silicone anti-drainback valve and better element than the regular filters.
