67K Model Production Breakdown

  • I would like to know the true production breakdown for the 67K (non-Shelby) Mustang. Being that Marti has all the production information from Ford for the 67 Mustang, this should be easy...Right?

So...if anyone has any figures to share, please do so. This is what I know so far, although I would like to know more...<img src=images/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

    <b>Total 67K production: 489

    Total Fastbacks: 319 (205 GTs, 114 GTAs)

    Total Coupes: ??? (? GTs, ? GTAs)

    Total Convertibles: ??? (? GTs, ? GTAs)</b>

Also, would anyone have info as to how many of the 67K Mustangs (non-Shelby) came from Ford with the Thermactor/Air Pump setup?

  • Bob,

    Total '67K production: 489

    Total Fastbacks: 319 (205 GTs, 114 GTAs)

    Total Coupes: 120 (77 GTs, 43 GTAs)

    Total Convertibles: 50 (34 GTs, 16 GTAs)

I got this information from Jim Chism. I believe he worked with Kevin Marti to attain these numbers.

    Tom

  • Hey Tom..Thanks for the numbers...I've long wondered what they were, now I know! <img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I would still like to find out how many 67K Mustangs came from Ford with the "Exhaust Emission Control System" (i.e. C7ZE Hipo Heads w/the thermactor ports) because mine was definitely one of them.

Then there were the 67K Shelbys destined for California DSOs. I wonder if anyone knows how many of these were made<img src=images/icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

  • "Also, would anyone have info as to how many of the 67K Mustangs (non-Shelby) came from Ford with the Thermactor/Air Pump setup?"

You would have to have Kevin run a report on K codes produced at San Jose or Dearborn with a 71 or 72 DSO after April 15th to get a close guess. Of course thus would not include the handful of GT350's delivered with Thermactors since they didn't use those DSO's But Kevin might be able to filter those cars by using a one or two Special orders that included those cars.

Likely the number is going to be small.

Remember that the C7ZE Hipo Heads with the ports could have been used on non-thermactor also. None ported ones were

  • I asked Kevin Marti about two years ago how many 289 HiPos came with thermactors. I don't think he would mind me telling this group. The number is 14.

Just because there are C7ZE heads or that the heads are machined for air injection might not be sufficient proof of being one of these cars. The injection ports could be plugged like Ford did with the C8ZE head. Look for evidence that there actually was a thermactor installed. Check for pulleys (should be a 2-groove crank pulley and three grove water pump pulley), or brackets that might have been left behind.

  • Question:

Would a Marti report specifically list the thermactor system in the options list? Perhaps worded as "Exhaust Emission Control"?

If so, would it be safe to say, if a Marti report for a kar doesn't list the "Exhaust Emission Control" option, the kar did not come from the factory with one?

  • BobM...It seems odd to me that ONLY 14 of all the 67K Mustangs that were produced after April 15, 1967 were equipped with "Exhaust Emission Control", i.e. the thermactor/air-pump system.

If I am not mistaken, ALL California DSO destined 67Ks after 4/15/67 were required to have this system....And that they all likely were produced at the San Jose/Milpitas plant exclusively.

Does it not seem unusual that only 14 were made/sold for the California market after this date???...I would think this number to be larger.

Nevertheless, my 7R02K is definitely one of these thermactor K's. It has the 2-groove crank pulley, the 3-groove water pump pulley and the 2-groove, LARGE diameter Hipo alternator pulley. In addition it has the specially calibrated 1.12 4100 Autolite with BRASS (vs Aluminum) tag. Tag reads:

    C7ZF B

    A 7DC

The base is stamped: 7Z B

And Tom...My Marti report list as options the "Closed Crankcase Emission System" and "Exhaust Emission Control".

Sooo...if Marti does not list these, then hence, a non-thermactor Hipo. I suppose a post-4/15/67 7R02K could have come with plugged C7ZE thermactor heads or the non-thermactor versions.

When I have time to figure how to post/share pics I will do so...Bob

  • Kevin indicated that the database recorded if a vehicle was equipped with a Thermactor system.

I agree that the number seems small, but consider that only 489 HiPos were made in 1967. Spread that out over all the states and production year and the density is pretty light. Now, think of yourself buying a 289 HiPo with smog. Might you go elsewhere to buy your car, like Nevada, Arizona, or Oregon? I would.

Today you have a rare car indeed. I have a feeling that in 1967 you would have been less happy with its uniqueness -- unless you were a enviro-friendly hippie!

If you email your pictures to me at bobmannel@charter.net, I will post them for you. I would like to see pictures of the thermactor air filter and hose connections, if still present. Much of the 289 HiPo smog was like the non-HiPo 289s, but the air filter was unique because of the open-style air cleaner did not have provisions for the bypass connection, so Ford ran the hose up to the thermactor air filter -- at least according to the assembly manuals.
