Installing a Full Length Console

  • Hi all.

My car originally had a FL console when it was first bought. When I bought it, it was gone. I have now bought a new repo and was wondering about how to install it. Do I have to remove the seat to put it in? If so, do I have to remove the seats from under the car?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially pictures if available.

  • Since the drive shaft tunnel already has the console screw retaining holes, you might be able to avoid seat removal. But (there is always a but) if the carpet doesn't have the holes I'd say the seats must be removed to create the necessary carpet holes and to avoid any seat upholstery damage.

The way I've found best over the years (for me) to create the carpet holes is; from under the car, push an ice pick through a hole, and from inside the car use a solder gun to melt the nylon pile and underlayment. It's a bit of a task to pierce the underlayment, but doable. It's vital to melt/seal the nylon pile, otherwise there is a real risk when installing the console retaining screw(s) it/they will grab the pile and start unraveling it. If that happens it can ruin your whole day. Ask me how I know.

  • Another stupid question, do I have to take the gear stick off, or can I feed the console over the gear stick? If I have to remove the gear stick, how do I go about this?

    Thanks.

  • With the seat (or seats - don't be lazy) out and the console cover plate off, the console should fit easy. Place the console at an angle over the shifter opening and then straighten it out over the 'hump'. I don't bother with the front bracket, it goes under the carpet and a sticks up thru a slot cut in the carpet - a pain in the ***. If you locate the existing holes and place an alignment pin in a couple of them (an appropiate size nail works just fine) that helps. An ice pick make hole alignment easy as well. Remember, the wiring need to be hooked up either when you first set the console in or definately before you screw it down.

  • Hi all.

Just closing this thread and letting you all know my dad and I put the console in yesterday. I followed the advice given and took out both the seats. Everything went smoothly with no problems whatsoever except we were doing the job in 100 degrees F temperature. But it's done and looks fantastic.

    Thanks for all your help.
