• Hello

i have a early 289 engine i have had for years in the garage it is complete carb to oil pan, i don't think it is a hi-po, but has a few quirks, such as the heads are slotted for push rods, it has the non rail type rocker arms. has c8 harmonic balancer, engine cast 4D2 c40e-6015

    engine tag is 289 65 1 4d 550 c

    heads are 289 64 4D2

    carb c57f-c b5 ce

i dont know if it is a a code or maybe d code?? any info apprecaited thanks

  • If it's a five bolt, it may be a 64 'D' code. The date code is the 4-D, indicating an April, 64, build. The 550 can be a 'D' code (550 or a 65 'C' code (550 J). Code 550 C is not listed.

  • Could you take another look at the tag? The 'C' part of the 550 is not listed in my reference materials, but that is not unusual. That last letter code ment what type of options, AT vs MT, A/C, P/S etc, and I've run across a few not listed.
