• I am looking at buying a '66 Mustang that the data plate identifies as an 'A' code. The seller claims that a 'K' code engine was swapped into it. Without pulling the engine apart, can I tell for sure? It has the correct air cleaner and valve covers, but that doesn't mean a thing. What about the manifolds, carb., exhaust or anything else I can see from the outside?

  • There would probably be a number (19, 18, 20) cast onto the heads (visible on top of the boss near just beyone the end of the valve cover). Some service replacements didn't have them, though.

Have the car started and listen for solid-lifter clicking.

Not really. Over the years, we've answered this question many times on this site, and you'll need to spend some time reading the posts that explain how to identify a real 289 HiPo engine. Take advantage of the ADVANCED SEARCH feature on the site to get more details. You can also check this link to help get started: http://www.hipomustang.com/images/hipoeng/
