early vs late 65 firewall clutch rod hole

  • I know I've posted about the clutch rod seal in early '65s before, but now that I'm farther along, can someone post pictures or hole diameter info on the early '65 clutch rod hole versus later ones? I know the seals were different. A picture of an early style seal would be helpful, too.

In my case it appears that someone tried to modify the firewall hole to fit the later '65 & 66 rod seal, but ended up butchering it. So they instead mounted the seal on a piece of metal and screwed it onto the firewall. I'd like to try and "un-butcher" my firewall, though I'll probably use the later style seal.

Lyle – I don’t think I have a picture anymore (lost a bunch during computer crash) but mine is held in place via a metal “bezel”. As I recall, it is stainless, or appears to be. So, I am questioning whether or not the metal piece you refer to is actually part of the butchering – maybe it’s the real thing. My car’s build date = 11/04/64.

My scheduled build date is 10-21-64. I don't have a good photo handy at the moment. I can tell you that the area where the hole is has definitely been modified. It looks like they tried to enlarge the hole by making some cuts and folding back flaps of metal. I'm not yet sure if any pieces of it are completely cut away.

The current seal arrangement is a later style seal, installed in a thin piece of metal which is attached to the firewall by a bunch of screws. Between that metal and the firewall is a sticky rubbery pad of some kind. I'll try to post some detailed photos of the disassembly when I download them from my camera over the 4th. Please excuse the primer dust on everything in this old photo:
