Timing chain cover for '65 w/ aluminum water pump

  • Need help on finding a '65 timing chain cover for my '65 289. In replacing the water pump (aluminum) I discovered that several bolts had been twisted off and my attempt to re-drill/tap new holes was a bust. Now need to put a new timing chain cover on and install the water pump. Several timing chain covers I've seen listed are only for cast iron pumps. I assume that there is different timing chain cover for cars w/ aluminum pumps. Please help! Thanks.

  • There is a diff. between the timing chain covers for the alum. and cast iron water pumps. The timing chain cover you have is for up to level 6 on the 289. Level 7 changes were done in march or may of 65 this is when ford switched the timing chain cover so a cast iron water pump could be used. I dont have a good one at this time. But get on to ebay and find one that looks just like yours (pay closed attn. to the water pump area) I had the smame thing happen, Its enuf to make you pull your hair out and i dont have that much anymore.

  • The change happened after March because my MID-March built engine still has the aluminum pump.

Bob Mannel's Small block Ford book has a TON of photos and casting numbers of the correct timing covers by year and type.

You can switch to the later style cast iron pump but it won't be exactly correct for an early car - I've seen a ton of people do this - especially if the motor has been swapped out.

There are 2 on eBay right now for the aluminum pump - please see my response to your other post for the item numbers.

My K has a 6/1/65 build date. Original engine with a cast iron water pump. Ed

Technically... that would be a scheduled build date.
