289 4V heads (not hipo)

  • Another under educationed question. I hope you guys don't mind.

I was talking with my dad the other day and he said that the 289 4v heads (A-code) heads were different from the 289 2V heads (c-code), something about the combustion camber portion of the head be different.

    1) Is this true?

    2) If so, are there any casting numbers or marking that identify 289 4v heads as such?

    3) If so, what would those castings/markings be, and where would I look to see them?

    Thanks in advance,

    Mark

  • Another change from 2V to 4V was in the pistons. 289 4V regular fuel versions had the same dish top pistons as the 2V version. The 289 4V premium fuel used flat top pistons in early 65 and added valve reliefs to the flat top pistons later in the year. This gives the 4V premium fuel version a higher compression ratio and more horsepower.
