'65 Full Console??

  • I believe that the console in my '65 Convertible was installed off-center.

It is very close to the passenger seat, and I can get my hand easily between thr drivers seat and the console-some say that Ford was notorious for this from the factory-I don't choose to believe this.

Please tell me how YOUR console fits! Thanks!

  • The factory installed consoles I have seen were usually installed pretty well. I think I sent pics of the GT convertible console and how it fit, that cars' console was factory installed. Believe I even hit the original holes when I put it back in.

I understand that your car had some structural repairs done. Was the center double-hump section replaced? If so, it could account for the console being slightly off as new holes would have had to been made.

Nonetheless, should be able to adjust yours. If new holes are required, the old ones can be filled and touched up with primer color.

  • Check to see if there is a front console bracket to the floor over the tunnel. You can do this by opening up console glove box door and see if there are two mounting screws to the top of the bracket. They are located about mid way in the glove box between the spring retainers. If there is no bracket, the console was probably not factory.

My experience with consoles are they are all junk, chuckit to the curb. All they do is rattle and tattle, and in my opinion they look like an after thought like the pony interior. If your car is a 4speed its about impossible to install a console off center as the 4speed has to shift thru all the gears, without hitting the console. If you do look at a console out of a car they are off center when you look down at them.

  • My car came from the factory with the console, I personally think it adds a nice touch to the car, its just that the darn thing was installed off center, I don't know how it was but it was, I have viewed literally hundreds of early Mustangs since my first one that I bought back in 1973 and most of them that have consoles have been installed basicly centered between the seats.

I just want to fix this and move on and I asked for opinions from members that HAVE consoles in their cars so I could determine what is a correct installation and what is not.

Charles: The "hump" in my car was replaced so I am assuming that the console had to be installed from scratch.

Like I said I think its best left to an upholstery expert which I have right here in town that I have been dealing with for over 20 years that I am sure can straighten the carpet, boot, and console out for me.
