Restoring a 64 K Code Fairlane

  • Larry, thanks for the email address for the generator and pulley. I just sent an email asking for the availability and price. I hope I can get this. I will then have every K Code specific part on the engine. That is the hard stuff to find.

    Thanks again,

    Gary

  • Ya Ya Ya, That's a nice car, but we are expecting to see picts of your car this morning. Just kidding I figure if you car had arrived you wouldn't be surfing the net.

    Larry

  • Larry - Yeah I called the driver and he said it would be later today. Something about hours driven and paper work. I haven't heard anything about the generator and pulley yet. Hopefully he will get back with me this weekend sometime.

Larry are your floor boards painted the same color as the interior or the outside body?

    Check these out.

Sorry but the original carpet has never been out of the car and I have no plans of pulling it out anytime soon. The car still has it's original paint and interior. The hardest thing about owning it is not doing anything to it.

I guess you are on pins and needles waiting. I know the suspence would be killing me.

    Larry

  • Well, the car finally go here. Larry, Phil from the FCA site got back with me. Sorry but they have been sold. Oh well, we will just have to keep watching for another one.

I definitely have my work cut out for me but I will have that car and engine looking like new. I don't expect to get much work done before I have to leave for New England but when I get back I will devote full time to this project. It has dual exhaust on it now but I'm almost positive it came with single exhaust. I'm going to go out in a little while and figure out how to open the trunk and doors. No lock in trunk or door handles. Door handles are supposed to be in the trunk.

Does anyone know if a 1964 Comet radio will work for a 64 Fairlane?

Thanks to all for the help,

    Gary

PS Wish I could post in the FCA site.

  • Sounds like there were few suprises. I posted a want add on the FCA fourms for a pulley.

Took mine out for a drive today. A lot of fun but not the same as a Mustang.

    Larry

  • Thanks for posting the want add for me. Well I'm not sure if there is a few surprises or not. If I can figure out how to open the trunk I will be able to inventory all the parts and then I will know what is missing. The only thing is when I last spoke with Rob he said the front bumper had a few spots on it. Heck, I can't even find the front bumper. Hopefully it's in the trunk but I don't think so.

I knew going in this was going to take a lot of work so with that attitude you are ready to handle what ever comes. I knew all the chrome pieces will have to be sent out and re-chromed. I knew the interior would have to be all re-done. I knew the dash would have to be sanded and re-painted with the proper paint. Who ever did the exterior paint job used the same paint for the dash.

If the majority of the interior and exterior trim pieces are there I will be happy. I'm think I can get the majority of this car back to original for around 20 to 25 thousand. Very little body work is needed. A few small dings here and there but overall really a straight car. I can find no evidence of rust but I'm sure there is some bondo on the car. Again, that doesn't really bother me because a good paint and body man can fix any of that if it needs it.

The shinning example of this car is the K Code engine. All the date codes match the assembly date of the car. It has all the K code specific parts on it except the generator assembly, fan, distributer, valve covers, and carburetor. I have all of these parts with the correct date codes where applicable except, of course, the generator assembly.

So, yeah there is a lot of work to do but at least I don't have a rust bucket to deal with. Thats when you can sink a lot of money in one of these cars.

On another note, I finally sent the carb for my 66 K FB to Pony Carbs. FedEx picked it up today. I am taking the original Ford 3 duces off and putting the original carb assembly back on. Another job I have to do.

OK,I've rambled enough. Thanks for the help.

  • Thanks to Chucks302 I now have a generator, pulley and bracket for the engine. Thanks very much Chuck.

Thanks for your help Larry in trying to locate one for me.

A little disapointed when I found out I don't have an original HIPO radiator. I hope I can find one.

    Thanks,

    Gary

  • Here's a link for yet another '64 Sports Coupe for sale that might even be a K code. The distributor is incorrect with a vacuum advance, the center console is missing, and the upholstery is incorrect, but the generator appears to have a HiPo pulley.

  • Well, I located a radiator with a date code of L30. This was the last of the HIPO Fairlane parts I needed. I have to make a trip to New England area and on my way up I am picking up the radiator and the generator. When I get back I will take the engine out and remove all the trim and get it ready for the paint shop.

I will start taking pictures of the process and if anyone is interested I will post them.

Thanks to all who helped up to this point.

Thanks Larry I will take you up on the offer. I'm sure I'm going to need a lot of help when I go to put all the trim and interior back. Yeah, I was able to get the trunk open after Rob told me just like you did how to do it. Thanks again for the help.

    Gary

  • Gary,

Glad to see you are getting going on the Fairlane. I have another small collection of parts here for you. I am waiting to see if any more parts come trickling in. The body on that car will look spectacular, it's real nice when they are rust free and not cut up.

    Good Luck!

Oh yeah...I rescued it from a Chevy guy's driveway!!!! Those guys get real confused when the distributor is staring them in the fact when you open the hood.

  • Thanks Rob. Sorry I didn't respond back to your email but I am in NH and I don't have DSL or Cable and on top of that I have to use WebMail as an email server.

I have all the goodies necessary in my posession to completely restore the engine and engine bay, except the valve covers and radiator. I hope to have them very soon.

When I get back to Florida I will begin the process of pulling the engine and detailing it. When I have it in the test stand I will shoot a couple of pics so you folks can look at it and make sure I have everything correct.

I agree Duncan. I think a K code engine in it's original glory is one of the sweetest looking engines ever produced.
