• Is it possible to easily replace the oem C6OE ford intake on my k code engine with a repop 289 Cobra Aluminum Intake Manifold Part# S2MS 9424A? My carburetor is a C6ZF-C and I do not want the Holley 715. Anyone done this ? should i have trouble or need a different spacer than the original one on the engine? thanks

their are several problems with this combination (Autolite 4100 w/ Cobra intake) I have personally experienced:

    1) You will have vacuum leaks unless you use some kind of plate between the intake & the carb. A 1/16" metal plate works OK. Available at Moroso or Summit. The Ford stock one inch spacer may or may not fit. A half inch phenolic block spacer will fit most stock or Shelby style hoods.

    2) If you don't use a spacer with a fitting for the PCV hose, use will need to make a fitting. Using one of the tapped holes in the Shelby intake will not distribute the PCV gasses evenly, resulting in an erratic idle and other problems.

  • Never tried it on any Mustang but my favorite is a Boss 302 plate which is thin, a phenolic heat barrier, and has a long nipple coming out and angling about 45°. The plate can be installed in any of four directions to make your PCV connection either front or rear left or right. Using thin McCord brand gaskets (may not be available anymore??)I stilled used the studs that came from Shelby/Ford on the late over the counter S2MS universal intake (has the extra bosses behind the carburetor) COBRA intake.

  • I appreciate the feedback. So if I follow you, I can use a 1/16" plate from summit or moroso and my Autolite C6ZF-C should work perfectly with the CObra intake no problem. don't try it with no spacer at all, and the stock HIPO spacer wont clear? does anyone know the part number for this spacer?? the intakes are like $400 so I dont want to throw my money away but would like the air flow.. thanks again.

  • The majority of 66 GT350's with automatics used Autolite carbs with the COBRA intake and no spacer and no problems. I see no reason why this combo wouldn't work for you. Using the stock spacer certainly may cause clearance problems. As mentioned, if you use the COBRA intake you will have to connect the PCV to one of the connections at the rear of the intake. This should not affect idle quality at all unless there are other issues. If there were any problems with this combo Shelby American would have addressed them back then.

I do agree that "Using one of the tapped holes in the Shelby intake will not distribute the PCV gasses evenly" since the gasses are fed to the #4 and #8 cylinders so those plugs may experience slightly more fouling but this shouldn't be an issue in a healthy engine.

  • Awesome. Thanks for the clarification. I think I will go ahead and get the COBRA intake and just bolt my Hipo Autolite to it without a spacer at all. I'll let you guys know how it goes when it happens.

Neither of my Shelbys with the pipe used for

PCV have erratic idle and very steady vacuum,

    16 on the 65 and 17 on the 67.

According to Jon @ Pony Carbs, many aftermarket intakes, including the Hi-Rise Cobra, are prone to air leaks when used with the Autolite 4100. I'm just pointing out that if you are having this problem, a thin steel spacer plate will help.

  • would it not depend, in the end, on how good a job the gasket material/adhesive works? Careful mating and diligent adhesive application should do it, eh?<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> LOL.
