66 versus 67 hipo air cleaner

Hello all..want to thank you for your time and knowledge you have shared with me..this is a great forum with great members..

I would like to know if there is a size diffrence or diffrence in look on the chrome hipo air cleaner on the 66 hipo versus the 67 hipo..

I ask because the one we have we bought about 20 years ago and did not realy know about date stamps etc.. we have a bottom that is dated 7A for a 67 of course we are now looking for a 6a base for our 66 shelby. But also is the top of the air cleaner the same for both years? I know there were differences in early 65 hipo chrome air cleaner but not sure about 66 and 67..

The top is the same so the only thing you need to find is

the bottom. 6A dated would be best but a 5A would probably

do as well. It needs the Closed Crankcase Emission system

(hose spout) as it is Shelby.

Just for reference the original air cleaner bottom for 6S1757 is dated 6C. As Bo mentions a 6A would work great too.

Thanks guys..thats what I needed to know...every pic I have seen of 66 shelbys shows the oil cap with vent tube hose going to the bottom of the air cleaner?? are you sure??

Yep, AFAIK all 65-66 GT350's had the closed crankcase emission system with a hose connecting the oil breather cap to the air cleaner bottom.

I am willing to stick my neck out on this and say that being as the 65 and 66 Shelbys were built without knowing their final destination, that the emission requirements had to at least meet California standards by having the closed system. If the final destination was California then everything worked out. If they had been built without the closed emissions, they would not have been able to be sold in California.

Fred, your theory is as good as any I've heard but I wonder about the 67 GT350s. I've seen a number of these without original closed emission systems. Dave
